Donald Trump Plagiarized Bane in His Inaugural Speech

People noticed that Trump basically quoted Bane in his inauguration speech

A line from President Trump’s inauguration speech on Friday had an eerie echo to the Batman villain Bane.

After Trump’s speech, people quickly noticed one line’s similarity to a Bane quote from the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises,” which came out in 2012.

“Today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to you, the people,” Trump said in his speech.

Not exactly the same, but it’s very close to what Bane (played by Tom Hardy) says of Gotham when he holds the city hostage and removes its police and powerful officials.

“We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you, the people,” Bane said.

Certainly Trump did not intend to quote Bane, but “give it back to you, the people” is a line that will have some staying power after Inauguration Day.

Bane of our existence: Trump speech has uncanny echo of Batman villain

Donald Trump has been compared to many things, but until now the Batman villain Bane had probably not been among them.

In his inaugural address on Friday, the new US president said his arrival in office had “special meaning” because “we are transferring power from Washington DC and giving it back to you, the people”.

As many were quick to point out on Twitter, that line had an uncanny echo of one spoken by Bane, the masked villain played by Tom Hardy in Christopher Nolan’s 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.

“We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you … the people,” Bane declares in the movie.

Bane is the villain in The Dark Knight Rises, while the hero is a billionaire scofflaw with access to unthinkable destructive technology who favors brutally assaulting criminals.

Donald Trump Plagiarized Bane in His Inaugural Speech

Donald Trump officially became president today, and in an inaugural address he promised many things, some of which may sound familiar, because they were directly lifted from the D.C. comics villain Bane.

Compare Trump’s declaration that, “Today’s ceremony, however has very special meaning. Because today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another. But we are transferring power from Washington D.C. and giving it back to you... the people. For too long a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have born the cost. Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered but the jobs left and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs and while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land. That all changes starting right here and right now because this moment is your moment. It belongs to you.”

Sound familiar? Declareth the cartoon Batman villain: “We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you... the people. Gotham is yours. None shall interfere. Do as you please. Start by storming Blackgate, and freeing the oppressed! Step forward those who would serve. For and army will be raised. The powerful will be ripped from their decadent nests, and cast out into the cold world that we know and endure. Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed. Blood will be shed. The police will survive, as they learn to serve true justice. This great city... it will endure. Gotham will survive!”

To Trump’s credit though, Steve Bannon probably wrote this speech.
