Nintendo’s Fire Emblem: Heroes is coming to iOS and Android on February 2nd
Nintendo has provided some new details on its next mobile game, a smartphone take on the long-running strategy series Fire Emblem. The game — dubbed Fire Emblem: Heroes — is described as a tactical role playing game. According to Nintendo, the game will feature a brand new story about two warring kingdoms, and it features the same anime fantasy style as the rest of the series along with characters pulled from past games. Maps are designed to fit on a smartphone screen, and you can use the touchscreen to drag units around.
The game will be free-to-play with optional in-app purchases, as you can buy things like orbs to summon specific characters. Heroes is launching on February 2nd on iOS and Android.
Though not Nintendo’s biggest franchise, Fire Emblem has been around for some time. The original game, dubbed Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, was only available in Japan, and launched on the Famicom in 1990. More recently, the series hit the Nintendo 3DS with the beginner-friendly Fire Emblem Fates last year.
The new version of Fire Emblem was first announced last April, alongside a mobile version of cutesy life sim Animal Crossing. Prior to today, Nintendo has remained quiet on both games since that initial announcement. In the meantime, the company released its first proper smartphone game with Super Mario Run on iPhone and iPad, an automatic runner starring the company’s most famous character, which was downloaded a record 40 million times in its first four days of availability.
In addition to mobile, the Fire Emblem series is also coming to the Nintendo 3DS in the form of Fire Emblem: Echoes - Shadows of Valentia, a new title inspired by the Famicom-exclusive second game in the series. There are also two games coming to Nintendo’s new Switch console: Fire Emblem Warriors, an action-heavy spinoff similar to Hyrule Warriors coming this Fall, and a currently untitled main entry in the series due out in 2018. Last week Nintendo revealed that the Switch will launch on March 3rd for $299.99.

Following up on the record-breaking success of Super Mario Run, Nintendo has released exciting information about their next big iOS game. Are you ready? You sure? Okay, here it is: The hugely popular Fire Emblem series will be making its way to iPhone and iPad as early as next month!
Here's what IGN had to say:
"During a Nintendo Direct today, Nintendo fully revealed its Fire Emblem mobile game, Fire Emblem Heroes, which will be available on Google Play for Android on February 2nd, and "soon" on iPhone and iPad."
As for the gameplay, IGN is reporting it will be similar, but different from Fire Emblem games in the past.
"An animated cutscene intro was shown off for the game. Each map will be an 8x6 grid built for smartphones. Players can drag an ally to an enemy unit to attack, or use traditional Fire Emblem controls on the touch screen. The series' weapon triangle will also return.
Players will take on the role of a summoner and summon characters from the Fire Emblem series to build their team. Orbs are used to summon additional characters, and they can be earned through gameplay or purchased within the app."
The part I find most intriguing about this is Nintendo's decision to include in-app purchases, something they seemed unwilling to do for Super Mario Run. No word on the cost (if any) of the initial download.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Fire Emblem series and am super pumped to hear my iPhone will be able to play Fire Emblem Heroes. The trailer on Nintendo Mobile's YouTube account sure has me excited that the classic anime art-style has stayed intact!
Nintendo’s Fire Emblem Heroes Arrives on Android and iOS on February 2
After the release of Super Mario Run last month, Nintendo has announced its next smartphone game – Fire Emblem Heroes. Unlike the adventures of the Italian plumber, the new game will be free-to-play with optional in-app purchases, and will release simultaneously on both Android and iOS on February 2.
Nintendo isn’t targeting a worldwide release for Heroes, though. India isn’t a part of the list of countries targeted for launch, which includes the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa. For what it’s worth, Nintendo has stated that “additional countries may be added”.
A mix of strategy and role-playing, Fire Emblem games involve tactical elements and depth that “that increases with every move you make”. The smartphone version has been redesigned from the ground up – especially the maps, which have been built with an 8x6 grid – and features an all-new storyline involving two new kingdoms, Emblian Empire and Askran Kingdom.
You’ll be able to play with existing characters from the Fire Emblem universe, and new Heroes created by artist Yusuke Kozaki, who has previously worked on other Fire Emblem titles, Awakening and Fates.
Beyond the main story, there will be other game modes as well – including Training Tower, with adaptive difficulty levels that are meant to be replayed; Arena Duels, a multiplayer mode with a leaderboard that defines your rewards; and Hero Battles, which include different battle scenarios for a limited period.
All these modes will allow you to develop your Heroes’ skills and abilities, which is what the game is about after all. Battles in Heroes will be turn-based, suited for “on-the-go play”, Nintendo claims. The iconic “weapon triangle system”, present in earlier Fire Emblem titles, will be present in Heroes as well.
Nintendo also added that the game would receive free updates after launch, and just like Super Mario Run, you’ll need a persistent internet connection to play Heroes.
In the build-up to the release, the company is also launching a “Choose Your Legends” event, where you can choose and vote for a favourite character from years past. The ones that come out on top will be included in Heroes as “special versions”.
You can pre-register on Google Play if you wish to be notified of the availability of Fire Emblem Heroes on February 2. The game has yet to be listed on the App Store.
