Last year's total eclipsed the previous record of $11.14 billion in 2015.
The crop of blockbuster movies in 2016 was topped by "Finding Dory," which tallied $486.3 million in sales in the United States and Canada, comScore said.
The latest Star Wars movie, "Rogue One," finished the year in second place, but it was only released on Dec. 16 in the United States and continues to enjoy strong sales.
Disney had six of North America's top 10 grossing movies in 2016 and all of the top three, including "Captain America: Civil War," which took in $408 million, according to comScore.
"Forgetful fish, super-heroes, household pets and space travelers led the charge in a year that was marked by an incredibly diverse selection of films from every genre and of every size and scope from all the studios," comScore's senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, said in a news release on Sunday.
2016 was the best yet for the North American box office
2016 was the highest-earning year in movie history in the US and Canada, according to new figures.
The North American box office made a record-breaking $11.4 billion over the course of the year, reports box office analyst ComScore.
The company's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian credited the "incredibly diverse selection of films from every genre and of every size and scope from all the studios" for the boost. Disney scored the top three movies of the year, delighting audiences with new installments of its Star Wars and Captain America franchises, as well as the smash hit ‘Finding Dory'.
The top 10 highest-grossing films at the North American box office for the year 2016 are:
1. Finding Dory - Disney - $486.2 M
2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Disney - $408.2 M
3. Captain America: Civil War - Disney - $408.1 M
4. The Secret Life of Pets - Universal - $368.4 M

North American Box Office Hits Record $11.4 Billion
The North American box office closed out the year with $11.4 billion in ticket sales, ComScore said Sunday. That marks a new record for the industry, bypassing the previous high-water mark of $11.1 billion that was established in 2015.
ComScore, a data measurement company, did not calculate admissions, but studio executives and analysts believe that attendance will be essentially flat. Nor does it account for inflation. The record was achieved, in part, thanks to more expensive tickets. Ticket prices hit new highs earlier in 2016, though an average full-year price for tickets have yet to be calculated.
Still it was a record that few thought the industry would set. This year was faulted for lacking major franchises such as James Bond and the Fast and the Furious series.
It was a particularly strong year for Disney, which controlled more than a quarter of the domestic market share despite releasing fewer films than any of the major studios. It made the most of what it had. Disney launched four of the top five highest-grossing films, including “Finding Dory,” the years top film with $486.3 million. When holdovers are taken into account, Disney had six of the year’s ten highest-grossing releases, a group that includes “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which debuted in 2015.
Other top films include “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” ($408.2 million), “Captain America: Civil War” ($408.1 million),”The Secret Life of Pets” ($368.4 million), and “The Jungle Book” ($364 million).
