John Cena proposes to Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33

John Cena and Nikki Bella beat The Miz and Maryse in their mixed tag team match at WrestleMania 33, and the fight set the stage for a classic WrestleMania moment that will live forever.

Following the match, John Cena finally popped the question to Nikki Bella.

Before dropping to one knee, Cena recalled an emotional moment they shared just before Nikki Bella’s neck surgery.

“Right as they were wheeling you to the OR, you were glassy and in-and-out, and my last chance, the very last second, I said stop. And I leaned in and I whispered ‘can you hear me?’

And you said ‘yes.’

And I said ‘well, I only have one question.’

You said ‘what is it.’

I said ‘do you know one day I’m going to marry you?’

And you said ‘yes.’

I just need you to say ‘yes’ one more time.”

Cena and Bella began dating in 2012, but he had been very open about the fact that he preferred not to get married and have children. In the buildup to their match at WrestleMania, Maryse taunted Nikki Bella over the fact that Cena had not yet proposed, saying that Bella was jealous of Maryse’s ring.

Love was clearly in the air at WrestleMania 33.

WWE stars John Cena and Nikki Bella, who have been dating since 2012, got engaged in the middle of the ring in front of tens of thousands of fans at the WWE’s biggest event of the year.

Following their match against The Miz and Maryse, Cena stopped the crowd and dropped to one knee before asking Bella to marry him.

“This. This is what you wanted,” Cena said after celebrating the victory alongside his girlfriend Bella. “Over a year ago you broke your neck and wanted to come back because you wanted a WrestleMania moment.”

“I promised I would tell you when the time is right,” Cena said, referring to having asked Bella about getting married prior to her surgery in 2016.

“I have been waiting so long to ask you this,” Cena said. “Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace, will you marry me?”

Bella nodded yes and sealed the deal with a kiss.

Prior to the match, Cena and Bella each approached and hugged Cena’s mother, Carol, who was seated ringside for the match. After the match and proposal the two went over and shared a moment again with Cena’s mother as well as Bella’s mother Kathy and brother J.J.

Cena’s reluctance to propose played a central role in the buildup for the WrestleMania match. In addition to Miz and Maryse – who are married to each other in real life – parodying the recently very public relationship, Cena and Bella’s personal life has been a part of the WWE’s reality shows “Total Divas” and “Total Bellas” on E! Cena has famously been against both getting married and having children.

Cena has been with the WWE since 2002, rising to be the face of the company and winning a record-tying 16 world championships. Bella started appearing regularly on WWE in 2008 alongside her twin sister Brie (real name: Brianna Monique Garcia-Colace).

The upcoming nuptials between the two makes it a trio of wrestling couples in the Bella family. In addition to Cena and Nikki, Brie is married to current WWE personality Daniel Bryan (real name: Bryan Danielson) and their mother Kathy is married to former WWE star John Laurinaitis.

John Cena proposes to Nikki Bella in the middle of WrestleMania

Professional wrestling tends to be all about the suplexes, the piledrivers, and the Stone Cold Stunners, and amidst all of that violence, it can be easy to lose sight of the one thing in life that matters more than wrestling: love. During WrestleMania 33 tonight in Orlando, though, superstar John Cena set aside some time so his heart could jump into the ring for once, and after he and longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella vanquished rivals The Miz and Maryse, Cena got down on one knee and proposed to Bella on the spot. Naturally, she said yes.

This was the payoff to some long-stewing drama between the two of them, as Cena’s reluctance to propose had become a major recurring plot point on the E! reality shows Total Divas and Total Bellas. As those who follow this stuff surely know, Nikki Bella (whose real name is Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace) wanted to settle down and have kids, but Cena didn’t. Tonight, though, he set his concerns aside and put on what could be the most romantic stunt in the history of WrestleMania.

As Wrestling Observer notes, this is the last big match for both Cena and Bella for the foreseeable future, as he’s going to “focus on Hollywood projects” and she’s taking time off for a neck injury.
