You can still see the Pink Moon Tuesday

If staying up into the wee hours of the morning to see the Pink Moon wasn't appealing to you, there's still a chance to see the moon Tuesday and early Wednesday.

The Pink Moon, which isn't actually pink, reached full peak at 2:08 a.m. ET Tuesday and will be visible to stargazers until April 12.

While many may be hoping to see a light pink moon, the first full moon in April is called a "pink moon" because it's when a spring flower called moss pink or phlox typically blooms, according to the Farmer's Almanac, Space.com reported. According to Space.com, the name likely comes from a Native American tradition. In addition to the Pink Moon, the first full moon in April is also called the Egg Moon, Fish Moon and Sprouting Grass Moon, Space.com reported.

On social media, many posted pictures of the not-so-pink Pink Moon.

"The #PinkMoon looks epic tonight on the eve before Passover," Twitter user @robbiekane74 said. "A very spiritual feel out there as Easter approaches! #MotherNature at her best."

WFMY Meteorologist @TimBuckleyWX  tweeted that the Pink Moon "won't look pink without Photoshop."

'Pink moon' to light up the sky tonight

Get out and look up Tuesday night for a full moon. A moon so full it will look pink!

Okay, we're joking about that part, the moon won't really be pink, but that's what you'll hear people calling it and there's a reason for that.

According to Space.com, it is named after pink flowers called wild ground phlox, which bloom in early spring and become widespread throughout the U.S. and Canada this time of year. In fact, the April full moon is the first full moon of spring in the Northern Hemisphere (it's the first fall season full moon in the Southern Hemisphere).

Tuesday is considered the best night, as the moon will be reaching its fullest phase, but you'll need to be up late or early, depending on your schedule. The peak time is around 2:08 a.m. EST.

Pink Moon: Stargazers Set For Spectacular Display As Jupiter Shines Alongside Full Moon

The Pink Moon is one of astronomy’s biggest misnomers. Tonight’s full moon (11 April) will be spectacular, but it won’t be pink.

The first full moon of spring was named by Native Americans after ground phlox, pink flowers that bloom across the US at this time of year.

But stargazers are still in for a treat, with the full moon lighting up the night sky and Jupiter shining especially brightly.

The gas giant recently made its closest pass with Earth in more than a year and is still dazzling stargazers from its position in front of the Virgo constellation.

Tonight’s Pink Moon represents the beginning of Easter in Christianity, the Jewish Passover and Hanuman Jayanti in Hinduism.

The moon is set to be brightest in the UK at 8pm BST. Here’s hoping for a clear view.
