To change your Minecraft username:
  1. Visit account mojang com, and log in with your Mojang account email address and password.

  3. Enter a new name, and confirm the new name by entering your password again.

Can you help me with a problem with my Minecraft account?
This website is not affiliated with Mojang, the developers of Minecraft. If you need help with your Minecraft account, please contact Mojang directly.

How often can I change my Minecraft username?
You can change your Minecraft username once every 30 days.

After I change my Minecraft username, when does my old username become available?
You can switch back to your old username after 30 days. Everyone else must wait 37 days before they can switch to your old username.

What is a UUID?
UUID stands for Universally Unique Identifier. Every Minecraft account has a different UUID. For example, my UUID is 403e6cb7-a6ca-440a-8041-7fb1e579b5a5. The UUID of a Minecraft account will never change. This gives Minecraft servers a new way to track players and make sure that bans, ranks, etc, remain with the player even after they change their name.

Will you remove my Minecraft username history from this website?
Mojang has stated that it is their intention that previous usernames can be seen¹, and they have provided a method to allow the public to access this information.² This website is meant to be a reference tool with the goal of having the most complete and accurate name information possible. Therefore, name information will not be removed from this website, and any requests to have name information removed from this website will be ignored.

Minecraft usernames

This article covers Minecraft usernames for Minecraft: Java Edition on PC/Mac. Minecraft on other platforms do not require usernames, but if you play on Minecraft Realms on these platforms you will use your Xbox gamer tag. The console editions of Minecraft use Xbox gamer tag or Sony PSN ID.

Where can I find my username?
If you log into Minecraft with your email, your username can be found in your account overview.

I've paid but don't have a username. How do I create one?
If you somehow made a purchase but didn't get a username, a green box will appear on your Mojang profile prompting you to choose a username.

Is the profile name you want to have taken?
If the username you want is taken, you will need to choose another name. We will unfortunately not be able to help you get an already taken username.

Are there any requirements in creating a username?
Requirements:
  1. Needs to consist of 3-16 characters
  2. No spaces
Allowed characters:
  • A-Z (upper and lower case)
  • 0-9
  • Only allowed special character is _ (underscore)
It is no longer possible to create a username with less than three characters.

Changing a username

Can I change my username?
Users who have a Mojang account (you sign in with your email) can change their username for free at account.mojang.com/me by clicking the (Change) link next to your profile name. After clicking the change link, you'll be able to see if a username is available to you. If it shows that it is not available, you will not be able to change to that name.

If you sign in with your username, you'll first need to migrate to a Mojang account before changing your username.

How often can I change my username?
If you've changed your username already, you'll need to wait 30 days to be able to make another change.

If you change your username, your old name is held for 37 days. This gives you an extra week to change back if you've made a mistake or changed your mind before your previous username becomes available to anyone else.

How far back does this work?
Username changes can be fully supported in-game as of Minecraft version 1.7.10 (released June 2014). If you were to play on a very old version of Minecraft, the game would treat your new username as a separate player. This article assumes that you are using a somewhat recent version of the game or server software.

If I ban someone on my server, and they change their username, do they stay banned?
Yes, and the same is true for whitelisted, or OP'd players. Account-level features on an unmodified server stay the same because the system is using your profile's unique ID instead of the username. This does not include the scoreboard feature, which uses usernames, and is not meant to store lots of long-term player data.

If I change my username, can someone see my previous usernames?
Yes. Username changes are set up so that you can get a username that you prefer, and are not designed to circumvent bans or anything of that sort.

How will this work with mods/VIP/Uber Omega Obsidian Rank on servers?
Ask the mod maker or server owner, as they'll know. Mods should be able to support this system, and most already do, but we aren't responsible for private servers or mods.

Will Mojang Support help me change my username?
No. The system is set up so that users can change their usernames. If you don't like your username, you can change it again in 30 days. Neither will we help you get a username that is already taken nor a name with less than three characters.

What about username moderation? Can I report someone?
Mojang has always had a pretty relaxed stance on usernames. Someone who chooses an inappropriate username is often banned by the servers that they join. Even though username changes are now a feature, people have been able to register questionably appropriate usernames since 2009, and the community has self-regulated. Implementing a comprehensive username filter is quite difficult, and doing so would diminish the openness that has made the game so popular. We would prefer not to have players constantly reporting each other via this help site; instead, please contact your server administrator. That said, we reserve the right to change particularly offensive names to something more cheerful, as needed.

How To Change Your Minecraft Name

Mojang will give Minecraft players the ability to change their name on February 4th. While it's a pretty simple process, there are some important rules to be aware of.

"The only thing you need is a Mojang account. If you currently sign in to Minecraft with an email address, you’re all good!" said Mojang today.

To change your name, do the following:
1. Go to your Mojang account page.
2. Click the "change" link next to your Minecraft name.
3. Choose your new name.

Older Minecraft accounts will need to be migrated over to Mojang before they can perform this change. You can migrate your account for free here.

Both the spelling and capitalization of your user name can be changed. Put some thought into your choice. While it's free to change your name, you'll have to wait 30 days until you can do it again.

Minecraft names are still unique so you can't choose one already in use by someone else. Even if you convince them to change their name, you can't switch to their old one right away. Their old name will become available 37 days after they switch to another.

Back in the early years of Minecraft, it was possible for players to register a username before they actually bought the game. These usernames will soon be deleted from Mojang's system, though, so paying customers can snatch them up. If you have one of those unpaid user names, here are the steps recommended by Mojang:

1. Be sure that you have access to your old, unpaid Minecraft account. You will need access to its registered email address. If you cannot access that username, you can contact customer support, provide your registered email address or physical registration location, and we will set it to a new email address.

2. If you haven't already, register a Mojang account at account mojang com/register. You cannot have more than one Minecraft username per Mojang account.

3. Purchase Minecraft with a gift code from minecraft.net/store or through a Minecraft prepaid card from a retail store. Old usernames can only be upgraded with gift codes or prepaid cards.

4. When redeeming your gift code or prepaid card at account.mojang.com/redeem, an option to import an old username will be available.

If you can't complete this process before these unpaid accounts are purged, you could still register the name normally. However, you run the risk of someone else grabbing your preferred name before you manage to do so.

Name changes won't wipe other parts of your account. If you're banned from a server, you'll stay banned. You'll also retain whitelist and op status on servers along with your inventory, pets and stats.

Mojang adds that name changes should work fine with the game's many mods. However, they add that they're not responsible for any issues that arise.
