Evan Rachel Wood: Dresses Aren’t a Requirement on the Red Carpet
Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood rocked a tux on the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday night. When asked about the style choice, Wood shared an empowering message for young girls.
“I’ve been to the Globes six times. I’ve worn a dress every time. And I love dresses, I’m not trying to protest dresses,” she said. “But, I want to make sure that young girls and women know they aren’t a requirement and that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. To just be yourself because your worth is more than that.”
She added: “You don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. Just be yourself because you’re worth more than that.”
The actress said that the outfit was also an homage to David Bowie and Victor Victoria because the date, January 8, is Bowie’s birthday.

It was the 70th anniversary of David Bowie's birth.
And Evan Rachel Wood honoured the late singer on his birthday on Sunday by wearing a custom suit by Altuzarra to the Golden Globes.
And though the 29-year-old actress is far from the first to opt out of wearing a dress to an award show - actress Kathryn Hahn joined her that very night in a Brandon Maxwell suit - she gave a spirited explanation for her choice.
Evan said in an interview with Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet: 'This is my third nomination and I’ve been to the Globes six times, and I’ve worn a dress every time.
'And I love dresses, I’m not trying to protest dresses, but I wanted to make sure that young girls and women knew they aren’t a requirement.
'And that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to, and to just be yourself because you're worth is more than that.
'So this year I said I’m going as an homage to Marlene Dietrich and Victor Victoria, and David Bowie because it’s his birthday.'
The three-piece set featured a structured black suit jacket with strong shoulders and satin lapel, while the suit pants flared slightly towards the end and also had satin stripes down both sides.
Foregoing the traditional button-down, the Westworld actress wore a white jacket over a pussybow blouse.
The blonde beauty was every bit as enchanting in a black-and-white suit as she would have been in a floor-length evening gown - perhaps even more so because of the empowerment the choice gave her.
Wood was up for best performance by an actress in a television series, drama, for her role in Westworld, but graciously lost to Claire Foy for her role in Netflix's The Crown.

Upon first glance you might just think Wood was making a fashion statement, but as she explained to Ryan Seacrest, the move was more than just sartorial.
