Selena Gomez debuts 'passion project,' suicide drama '13 Reasons Why'

For Selena Gomez's latest TV series, she's stepping away from the spotlight and behind the camera.

Gomez shared a first look at Netflix' new series 13 Reasons Why, on which she's working as an executive producer.

The new series is based on the young adult novel of the same name, following the aftermath of a high school student's suicide. The actress shared a teaser clip, starring Katherine Langford, on her top-followed Instagram account on Thursday.

"A peek at a passion project I've been working on with @Netflix. @13ReasonsWhy arrives 3/31," she wrote in the caption.

Gomez has spoken out about her own mental health struggles, following her canceling dates on her Revival tour and entering rehab in 2016. "If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken," she declared in an emotional speech at the AMAs later that year.

"I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges," she told USA TODAY about canceling her tour dates. "I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off."

Selena Gomez shares '13 Reasons Why' sneak peek

She never appears on screen, but Selena Gomez still has good reason to be touting her new Netflix series, "13 Reasons Why."

Based on the young-adult mystery novel by Jay Asher, Gomez is an executive producer on the show about a teenage girl who leaves behind cassette tapes explaining her suicide.

The actress-turned-singer teamed up with her mother, Mandy Teefey, to bring the series to screen.

Gomez posted a trailer for the show on Instagram to announce its March 31 premiere date.

On Thursday, she shared a selfie explaining how the series came about.

"This was the day I was nervous as hell going into @Netflix for the first time to talk about @13reasonswhy," Gomez wrote. "My mom found this book in 2009 and worked her a** off to make it with me, guide me and tell this story authentically (the only reason, beside Jay this project was even made)."

"13 Reasons Why" is the first series Gomez has produced. (She served as an executive producer on the TV movie, "The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.")

The show is directed by Oscar winner Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight").
