Shia LaBeouf released after arrest for assault outside NYC museum

Actor Shia LaBeouf's ongoing, livestreamed anti-Trump protest/art installation hit a snag Wednesday night after he was arrested for getting into a physical altercation with another man. He was later released.

The actor, who has been chanting "He will not divide us" into a live camera since Friday's presidential inauguration, was charged with misdemeanor assault after pulling the scarf off an unidentified 25-year-old man outside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, N.Y. It's not clear what provoked the confrontation.

Police said LaBeouf scratched the man's face, although he refused medical attention.

It was not immediately known if the actor retained an attorney for his latest bout of trouble with New York police: In June 2014, he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and lighting a cigarette in the theater showing Cabaret.

The New York Post reported LaBeouf was released Thursday shortly before 4 a.m., outside the 114th Precinct, and published a picture of him with his hand raised in a two-finger "rock-on" gesture. LaBeouf shouted, "We will not be divided!”, waved to a handful of supporters and jumped into a green cab.

Videos posted on social media show LaBeouf returning to the site before sunrise to resume chanting.

He faces a misdemeanor assault charge and is due in court April 4.

The livestream's website, created by LaBeouf and two collaborators, invites passersby to join the 24-hour-a-day, 4-year endeavor and stop by the Museum of the Moving Image "to deliver the words 'He will not divide us' into a camera (mounted on an outdoor wall).…repeating the phrase as many times, and for as long as they wish."  LaBeouf has been a frequent, though not constant presence.

Despite the project's mantra, LaBeouf told the Associated Press that it wasn't technically just about opposing Trump.

“We’re anti-division out here. Everyone’s invited,” LaBeouf said in a Monday interview captured on the video stream. “I’m just saying, ‘Be nice to each other.’”

It was unclear whether the camera captured any of Thursday's early morning confrontation, but it did show the aftermath, including LaBeouf being handcuffed and led off by police.

Since the art installation began, the cameras have shown him getting aggressive with some participants. In one instance, he shoved a man who said "Hitler did nothing wrong."

In the moments before his arrest, he issued a plea into the camera.

"Hey, be nice. Everybody be nice down here, man. Just be nice! That's the only requirement. Be nice!" he said. "That's all I ask. Be nice. Pro this, pro that. Cool. But be nice."

Cops release Shia LaBeouf after anti-Trump clash

Flashing a defiant “rock on” sign, actor Shia LaBeouf emerged early Thursday from a Queens police station, where he was released after allegedly slugging a man at an oddball anti-President Trump protest.

“We will not be divided!” he proclaimed at around 3:45 a.m. outside the 114th Precinct, waving to a handful of supporters, and then hopping into a green cab.

The “American Honey” star was performing his “He Will Not Divide Us” protest at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria when he allegedly grabbed at the scarf of a 25-year-old man, “causing a scratch to the man’s face,” then pushed him to the ground, police told Reuters.

Cops arrested LaBeouf about 12:30 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and harassment.

The alleged victim did not ask for medical treatment, and remained at the scene, police said.

A video taken from the performance, going on outside the Museum of the Moving Image, shows LaBeouf being apprehended in the background.

In an earlier video, a man approaches LaBeouf and embraces him before strangely shouting, “Hitler did nothing wrong.”

LaBeouf then appears to shove the man before the camera pans away. It was not clear if this was the same incident for which LaBeouf was arrested.

The actor was released on his own recognizance.

LaBeouf has stationed himself outside the museum since Trump’s inauguration as part of a participatory public art project that he and two partners intend to run throughout Trump’s presidency.

Members of the public are invited to join the livestreamed performance.

LaBeouf told the Associated Press this week that the project was not anti-Trump but rather “anti-division.”

“I’m just saying, ‘Be nice to each other,'” he said.

LaBeouf recently wrapped shooting on Janus Metz Pedersen’s “Borg/McEnroe,” a drama chronicling the 1980 Wimbledon final between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. LaBeouf plays McEnroe.

Shia LaBeouf arrested on live stream after an apparent altercation

Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested Wednesday evening during his live-streamed protest project against President Donald Trump. The Associated Press reports that LaBeouf was detained after he “allegedly got into an altercation with another man,” pulling the man’s scarf and scratching his face. The Guardian says the arrest was made on Wednesday evening.

According to the AP LaBeouf faces a misdemeanor assault charge, but it’s not clear exactly what the cause of the altercation was. It’s possible it involved someone attempting to provoke LaBeouf, with a fan account of He Will Not Divide Us project, @HWNDUS, shared a clip that allegedly shows the incident that led to the arrest.

In it, a man in sunglasses poses with LaBeouf to take a video together. The unknown individual puts his arm around LaBeouf and then says “Hitler did nothing wrong.” LaBeouf shoves him away and the man responds: “Hey, why did he attack me?”
