5-star DT Marvin Wilson commits to Florida State with custom Jordans

Five-star class of 2017 defensive tackle Marvin Wilson makes it official announcing his commitment to Florida State over LSU in the day’s most highly anticipated commitment. The Episcopal (Texas) product is the No. 6 player on the 247Sports Composite.

He was the consensus best prospect in the country yet to verbally commit to a school coming to Signing Day, and his commitment late in the day meant quite a bit of angst built to this moment from the teams that were in the running for him. This was pretty much between Florida State and LSU, though Ohio State and Oklahoma had maintained hope.

Wilson is good enough that he’d have fit well in any defense. But in the 3-4 run by LSU coordinator Dave Aranda, he would have been a natural fit as a gap-plugging nose tackle. Run-stopping in the SEC requires a good one, and Wilson has a chance to be a great one. Head coach Ed Orgeron is a career defensive line coach, which helped the Tigers in Wilson’s recruitment.

The Noles lean a lot on four-man defensive lines, and Wilson’s big enough and quick enough to be an effective three-technique tackle (aligned between a guard and offensive tackle) for a long time in the ACC. He’ll make running the ball against the Noles a lot harder, and it was already hard enough. FSU gave up 3.6 yards per carry this past season.

Wilson’s high school tape is mostly him bringing pain to offensive linemen who aren’t qualified to block him and ball-carriers who aren’t big enough or fast enough to elude him. He’s adept at defeating blocks, and he’s got the athletic explosion to launch himself at the ball after slowing down to deal with blockers.

Wilson is listed at 6’4 and 329 pounds. He already has power conference size, and once he’s spent a few months in a collegiate strength-and-conditioning program, he could be a real terror. The blockers he’ll see in college are better than what he’s seen before, but Wilson’s going to get a lot better, too.

At Episcopal High School in Bellaire, Texas, he was teammates with five-star Stanford offensive tackle commit Walker Little, and he played in arguably the best high school football state in the country. He should adjust quickly to the college game.

National Signing Day 2017: Top uncommitted recruit Marvin Wilson to announce on ESPN2

Marvin Wilson, the top-rated uncommitted recruit in the Class of 2017, is set to make his decision live on ESPN2 during at 4 p.m. ET.

The 6-4, 329-pound athlete is rated the best defensive tackle in the nation, according to 247Sports composite rankings, and the No. 6 player overall.

What schools are interested in Marvin Wilson?
In December, the Texas native told reporters that Florida State and LSU were in the lead to earn his pledge, but he also holds offers from Ohio State, Texas, Baylor, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan. He took an official visit to Oklahoma in September, Florida State in October, Ohio State in November, and most recently LSU on Jan. 13.

On Wednesday afternoon, 62 percent of 247Sports' crystal ball predictions had Wilson going to the Tigers and 28 percent to the Seminoles.

The Buckeyes may be seen as a dark horse, though. Wilson tweeted about his thoughts of joining Urban Meyer's program just two weeks ago, though just five percent of crystal ball voters predict he'll end up there.

A commitment to LSU could bump its composite ranking up to No. 4 overall or hop Florida State over the Tigers to the No. 5 spot. Regardless of his college choice, Wilson's decision is the most anticipated of 2017's rendition of National Signing Day.

Marvin Wilson settles National Signing Day ‘second thoughts,’ commits to FSU

National Signing Day’s biggest mystery has been solved. After creating a bit of stir on Tuesday night with a single tweet that spoke of “second thoughts,” Marvin Wilson ended up signing with Florida State on Wednesday. The mammoth defensive tackle out of Bellaire, Texas, made his announcement live on ESPN2.

“I feel good. I’m just blessed to be in this position live on TV,” Wilson said before thanking God, his family, his teammates and coaches. Then he said, “Without further ado” and unzipped his jacket to show off his T-shirt featuring the Seminoles logo.

“I just went out, I loved everything about it,” Wilson said of his decision to choose FSU. “The environment was just great. I’m just ready to go out there and be with them.”

As far as goals, Wilson intends to have an immediate impact.

“I just want to go out there and be freshman all-American,” the 6 feet 4, 329-pound player said. “Whatever Coach [Jimbo Fisher] wants me to do, I’m gonna do.”

Wilson made his choice after making several schools sweat, including Louisiana State University, which according to ESPN2, was hoping Wilson would choose them up until he unzipped his jacket.

Also in the running were Oklahoma, Ohio State and South Florida, all of which likely got their hopes up a bit when Wilson tweeted, “Starting to have second thoughts” late Tuesday night.

The Buckeyes might have been particularly encouraged by Wilson’s mysterious missive, as Coach Urban Meyer reportedly made a late push for the top-ranked defensive tackle recruit in the country. Their hopes may have been initially raised after Wilson tweeted a picture of himself in a Buckeyes uniform late last month.
