Lollapalooza 2017: Chance the Rapper, Lorde, Arcade Fire top 170-band lineup
Chance the Rapper, Arcade Fire and Lorde are among the headliners announced Wednesday for Lollapalooza.
Muse, the XX, Blink-182, DJ Snake and Justice also are stacked at the top of the festival, which returns to Grant Park on Aug. 3-6. One-day tickets ($120) go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday at lollapalooza.com.
Among the 170 bands scheduled for eight stages over four days are Cage the Elephant, Run the Jewels, the Shins and Spoon. Rae Sremmurd, Lil Yachty and Big Sean are among the hip-hop chart-climbers sprinkled throughout the lineup.
Four-day tickets sold out in 2 hours 24 minutes Tuesday, a less frenzied pace than the 2016 four-day ticket on-sale, which swept through 320,000 tickets in 46 minutes. Sales were goosed Tuesday when Chance the Rapper took to his Twitter account and its 3.5 million followers to suggest, “Yes I’d say go buy the #lolla ticket.”
The overall lineup continues to show signs of strain. Last year, the festival spread to four days from three for the first time, and the talent thinned out – there simply aren’t enough quality bands and artists touring each summer to fill that many slots. Similarly, there appears to be an awful lot of filler to wade through each day this year to get to the gems.
Here’s a breakdown of each day’s lineup:
Aug. 3: Muse, Lorde, Cage the Elephant, Wiz Khalifa, Porter Robinson, Liam Gallager, Migo, Spoon, Lil Uzi Vert, Jon Bellion, George Ezra, Capital Cities, Kaytranada, Baauer, the Drums, A-Trak, Tritonal, Gryffin, CRX, Temples, Suicideboys, Hippo Campus, Honne, Cheat Codes, Kevin Devine, Paper Diamond, Middle Kids, the Hunna, Oliver Tree, Jain, the O’My’s, Declan McKenna, Unlike Pluto, Atlas Genius, Arizona, Gibbz, Pham, Michael Blume, Elohim, Stanaj, Kweku Collins, Max.
Lorde’s ascent was affirmed with her performance at Lollapalooza in 2014. Now her second album, “Melodrama,” due out June 16, is one of the year’s most anticipated releases, and the 20-year-old New Zealand singer is sure to draw one of the weekend’s biggest crowds. Haitian-Canadian DJ Kaytranada will bring a heady inventiveness to his club beats. Spoon’s terse, taut melodies will keep the frills to a minimum. Chicago MC Kweku Collins will likely draw an early slot, so don’t be tardy.

Run the Jewels is one of the best things about this day’s lineup and the entire weekend, for that matter – El-P and Killer Mike are one of the best duos in hip-hop history. Whitney quickly rose from local buzz band to international touring act on the heels of its excellent 2016 debut, “Light Upon the Lake.” Glam duo Lemon Twigs is coming off a much acclaimed series of performances at the recent South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas.

Chance is a seasoned festival performer already, and is sure to pull out all the stops in this hometown headlining appearance. In its timing, his high-profile slot recalls Kanye West’s headlining appearance at the 2006 Lollapalooza when he brought out Common, Twista and Lupe Fiasco for cameos. Who will Chance’s guests be? Warpaint remains an excellent summer concert band with its slinky grooves and breezy vocals. Veteran Chicago DJ Kaskade puts songs and dynamics ahead of predictable crescendos.

The fifth Arcade Fire studio album is due out this year and a new single, “I Give You Power,” features Mavis Staples. If the Chicago gospel-soul great is in town, is there anything that can keep her from making an appearance during the Montreal band’s headlining set? The Shins write beautiful songs but have never been a particularly dynamic live act. The screaming-fan ratio will be extremely high for hip-hop upstarts Rae Sremmurd and Lil Yachty, but expect Chicago’s gifted Noname to deliver one of the day’s most impressive sets. For a dose of cathartic guitar-rock, Car Seat Headrest is your ticket.
The Kidzapalooza stage, an annual fixture, will include performances by Tim Kubart & the Space Cadets, Lucky Diaz, Q Brothers, Sleepy Man, Jo Jo & the Pinecones, Lard Dog & the Band of Shy, Little Miss Ann, School of Rock Allstars.

Four-day tickets to Lollapalooza 2017 sold out within hours of going on sale Tuesday.
The tickets became available at www.lollapalooza.com/tickets at 10 a.m. By around 12:45 p.m., there were none left.
General admission four-day tickets cost $335 plus fees, VIP four-day tickets cost $2,200 plus fees and platinum four-day tickets cost $4,200, including fees. Official hotel packages were also available.
The music festival will be held in Grant Park from Aug. 3-6. Rumored headliners include Muse, Arcade Fire and Chicago's own Chance the Rapper. The full lineup will be released at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Lollapalooza is set to unveil its 2017 lineup on Wednesday morning. Industry sources tell Consequence of Sound that Arcade Fire, Muse, and Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper are among the headliners topping the bill.
Arcade Fire have played Lollapalooza twice before, first in 2005 as an early evening act opening for The Killers, and again in 2010 as one of the festival’s marquee headliners. The band’s long-awaited return to Grant Park marks their first confirmed US performance of 2017 and comes amidst rumors of a new studio album.
As for Muse, they’ll be headlining Lollapalooza for a third time following appearances in 2007 and 2011. The festival set is part of an expansive US summer tour announced in anticipation of a new album.
In 2013, Chance the Rapper made his Lolla debut on the BMI stage. A year later, he returned to close out Perry’s Stage. He’s now risen the ranks to headliner status and will take the stage at his hometown festival for what will arguably be the biggest performance of his career. Last year, Chance released his latest mixtape, Coloring Book, and already he’s talking of a brand new full-length project.
Lollapaloza returns to Chicago’s Grant Park from August 3rd-6th. Four-day GA passes went on sale and instantly sold out ahead of Tuesday’s announcement. Single-day tickets will be available beginning Wednesday.
