Villagers "shocked" to find man swallowed whole by python

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A 25-year-old Indonesian man swallowed whole by a python on the island of Sulawesi was likely ambushed from behind, villagers have said.

A six-minute video obtained by CBS News on Wednesday shows villagers slicing open the python’s carcass to reveal the legs and torso of the dead victim, named Akbar.

Junaedi, the secretary of Salubiro village in West Sulawesi province, told The Associated Press that villagers began searching for Akbar on Monday night after realizing he hadn’t returned from working on his palm oil crops the previous day.

Junaedi said Wednesday that the search party found scattered palm oil fruit, a picking tool and a boot, and then spotted the engorged 23-foot-long reticulated python.

“We saw a python that couldn’t move properly and its belly was swollen,” said Asdin Rudi Fathir, 43, according to the Retuers news agency.

“We killed the python and dragged it out from the bush. It takes quite a while to drag it out because the snake is big and heavy,” Junaedi said. “After that, we touched the snake’s belly and felt like legs with a boot inside the belly, then we cut open the belly.”

“When its stomach was cut, we first saw his boot and legs near the neck,” he said. “It seems he was attacked from behind because we found a wound on his back.”

Fathir said people at the scene were “shocked to find a human body inside.”

Reticulated pythons grab onto their prey with dozens of sharp curved teeth and then squeeze it to death before swallowing it whole. They are widespread in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia.

Reports of humans being killed by pythons are extremely rare. In the wild they are known to eat monkeys, pigs and other mammals.

Junaedi said Akbar’s absence wasn’t noticed until Monday because his wife was visiting her parents in another province. The alarm was raised when his uncle called on him and found his house locked.

Like many Indonesians, Junaedi uses one name, as did Akbar.

Indonesian man's body found inside python - police

A missing Indonesian man was found dead inside the body of a python, according to local police.

Akbar went missing on Sunday on the island of Sulawesi, after leaving to harvest palm oil.

In the search for the 25-year-old, police told BBC Indonesian that they had found a huge snake they suspected had swallowed the man.

The reticulated python, reported to be 7m (23ft)-long, was cut open and the man's body was found.

Video shot by police showed the snake being cut open with a long knife, slowly revealing the man's clothed body.
How can a snake eat a human?

Reticulated pythons are among the world's longest reptiles and suffocate their victims before swallowing them whole.

Pythons rarely kill and eat humans, although there are occasional reports of them swallowing young children or animals.

Mashura, a spokesperson for the police in West Sulawesi province told BBC Indonesian that villagers reported to police that Akbar had been missing for 24 hours.

Police then conducted a search and found the snake near the family's palm plantation.

"They didn't find him (Akbar), but the villagers saw an unmoving python in the ditch. They grew suspicious that maybe the snake had Akbar. When they cut it open, Akbar was inside the snake," Mashura, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said.

Village secretary Salubiro Junaidi told The Jakarta Post: "People had heard cries from the palm grove the night before Akbar was found in the snake's stomach.

"When the snake was captured, the boots Akbar was wearing were clearly visible in the stomach of the snake.
"Resident[s] cut open the belly of the snake and Akbar was lifeless."

The reticulated python (Python reticulatus)
  • Is the longest snake in the world
  • Is believed capable of reaching over 10m (32ft) in length
  • The longest in captivity is held in Kansas City, US, and measured 7.6m (25ft) in 2011, according to Guinness World Records
  • Lives in forestry, is normally fearful of humans and is rarely seen
  • Is often treated as a sacred animal in parts of Indonesia when caught
  • Is one of dozens of python species, which are found in sub-Saharan Africa, Australia, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Burma, China, and Southeast Asia

Body of Indonesian man swallowed whole by monster 7m-long python is cut from its stomach by horrified villagers

Horrified villagers searching for their missing pal were shocked when they found him in the stomach of a 7m-long PYTHON who had swallowed him whole.

Friends of Akbar Salubiro was still wearing welly boots, short and t-shirt when he was cut from the belly of the beast.

The snake was sliced open with an 18-inch hunting knife after villagers hunting for Salubiro found it in his back garden.

The 25-year-old vanished after he set off for work harvesting palm oil in a remote village on the island of west sulawesi, Indonesia, on Sunday night.

When he didn't return home concerned friends and relatives began looking for him the next evening.

They found the stodged python sprawled out in Akbar's own back garden on Monday night at 10pm - and feared he had been suffocated and swallowed.

Locals gathered round as one man used an 18-inch long hunting knife to slice open the serpent - and found Akbar inside still in tact.

Incredible footage shows the corpse being slowly removed from the killer reptile as the leathery skin is peeled away.

Neighbour Satriawan - who knew Akbar - said: "He was found in the location of the garden.

"Initially Akbar set out from his home to go to harvest palm, after not returning to his home people looked for him."

Local media reported that Akbar's wife, Munu, was away at the time and only found out when pictures and video emerged in the news.

Village secretary Salubiro Junaidi said: "People had heard cries from the palm grove the night before Akbar was found in the snake's stomach.

"When the snake was captured, the boots Akbar was wearing were clearly visible in the stomach of the snake.

"Resident cut open the belly of the snake and Akbar was lifeless."

Reticulated pythons are boa constrictors that suffocate their victims before swallowing them whole.
