Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Return to Their Boho Roots on the Met Gala Red Carpet

It’s not a surprise to see the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have a boho Met Gala moment. The two, after all, have a corner on (good) granny style. Having done all-black ensembles for “China: Through the Looking Glass” and broken their twinning style last year (one wore black, the other gold) for “Manus x Machina,” the sisters wore complementary looks this year that, appropriately for the evening’s theme, seemed to pay homage to Rei Kawakubo’s “Broken Brides” collection of Fall 2005.

The duo might have skipped the flower crowns Kawakubo accessorized her show with, but Mary-Kate had full-on festival hair that worked with her hippie-ish beads. Her ivory high-necked open-work dress had a 1910s vibe that she updated with a modern lingerie-dressing twist: black briefs peeking out from beneath. More modestly, Ashley topped her white lacy dress with a fur-trimmed embroidered jacket and cross that recalled the OTT luxe of Christian Lacroix, darling.

The first Monday in May just so happens to be the Met Gala. Which basically means it's the day that celebrities flock to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in their finest couture and hang out at the prestigious event. Usually they look kind of excited when they run into their fellow A-listers, because what a great photo op, right? Usually...

Unless you are, of course, the Olsen twins. You see, when they bumped into Nicki Minaj on the red carpet, Mary-Kate and Ashley didn't even crack a smirk.
