How To Sell On Ebay ( Step by Step ) Guide

Learn How to Sell on eBay

eBay has very few barriers to entry, so most new sellers just jump on and start listing. While eBay makes this possible, it is wise to step back, read the eBay policies, and understand what can cause account restriction as well as suspension. eBay doesn't buy "I didn't know better" as an excuse when a rule is violated. Make sure you understand these basic rules before starting to sell on eBay.

Take Your Own Photos
It is against eBay policy to use another seller's photos or to steal them off the internet.

If using a photo that you did not take, you must have written permission from the owner. The official eBay policy states:

You should be sure you have permission from the rights owner or creator before you use the following:
Images or text copied from websites or internet searches
Stock photos and text
Information from product packaging
It's usually OK to use information such as measurements, weight, or other item specifications that are necessary to describe the item that you simply can't say any other way. However, you should avoid using any other text from product packaging unless you have permission from the owner to do so.
Images and text copied from listings of other eBay members
Scans or text copied from catalogs or advertisements

Understand Your Selling Limits
All sellers have selling limits. If you are brand new to eBay, your limits will likely be as low as 10 items and $500.

If you have had an eBay account for several years, but have never sold anything, your limits will be higher because eBay sees you as a trusted community member.

Selling limits are sort of hidden on eBay, so here is how to find them:

You can see most of your account limits in My eBay and in Seller Hub. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages, sign in to your account, then select the All Selling option in the Sell section on the left side of the page (or in the Selling Manager Summary). In Seller Hub, you can see your account limits in the Overview section.

Learn About the VeRO Program
eBay has a program called VeRO, which stands for Verified Rights Ownership. Basically, VeRO is a list of companies or brands who don't want their items sold on eBay or insist that the items be authentic. For example, Michael Kors is on the VeRO list, but as long as the item is authentic, it can be listed and sold.

The VeRO Participant Profile Page states:
To help you safely sell branded products on eBay, we offer the following pages written by intellectual property rights owners and similar organizations that work with eBay.  These pages give information about the brands’ products and legal positions. The rights owners are solely responsible for the content.  Please contact the rights owners directly if you have questions. Some rights owners who work with eBay did not to contribute a page, so the list of brands is not comprehensive.

If you commit a VeRO violation, you will receive an email that says,
Your auction was most likely terminated because it displayed unauthorized reproductions of copyrighted images or trademarks owned by (company), or because it offered for sale unauthorized merchandise.

The listing will be pulled off eBay and your account may be limited.

Give It Time: eBay Is a Marathon Not a Sprint
New eBay sellers often throw in the towel when their items don't sell right away. The 7-day auction is simply an arbitrary number of days to have a product for sale. Try 30-day listings for a few months and give buyers time to find your listing. The right buyer may not see your item in 7 days, so leave the item listed for a while. List a variety of different kinds of items. You will learn what kinds of items you like working with, and those you don't. It takes time to learn how and what to sell on eBay that is a good fit. Take your time and find what works for you.

How To Register And Sell On eBay

eBay is a popular shopping website where individuals and businesses can buy and sell new and second-hand items. In this guide, we’re going to show you how to sell a single item on eBay. The first time you do this, you’ll need to create a ‘seller’s account’, but once this is done, any future sales will be much easier.

You’ll need:

  • a computer with an internet connection
  • a credit or debit card.

Follow these step-by-step instructions on how to sell on eBay

Step 1: Go to the eBay website.

Step 2: You can only buy or sell on eBay if you’re registered. If you’re new to eBay, click register above the eBay logo.

(If you’re already registered, click Sign in, enter your user ID and password and go straight to Step 5 below.)

Step 3: To register, you’ll need to fill out details such as your name, email address and chosen password. Once you’ve done that, click the blue Submit button at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4: A pop-up will confirm the email that you have selected for your account. Click Continue if you are happy to proceed.

Step 5: You will be taken back to the eBay homepage. Click on Sell at the top of the screen, and a ‘Update your information’ page will open. Complete your address information and click Continue.

Step 6: You will now be taken to a new page where you can start to list your item for sale. Type the name of the item you want to sell in the box provided and click Get started.

Step 7: A new page will open with step-by-step instructions on how to create your listing, including how to give your item a clear, specific title and how to upload a photo. It will also show you how much money it will cost to list your item.

Step 8: Once you’ve filled in all the details for your listing, click List with displayed fees at the bottom of the screen.

Step 9: A new page will open. Here you’ll see how your listing will look before it’s posted on eBay. Click Continue if you’re happy with the way it looks. Click Edit listing if you want to make any changes.

Step 10: If you’ve sold an item before, your listing will now be posted (so go to Step 15 below). If this is the first time you’re selling something, a new page will open asking you for extra information. Click Continue.

Step 10: Review your account information, check the box and click Continue if it is correct.

Step 11: eBay will then verify your information. This can take a minute or two. You will then be asked to verify your phone number. Click the Call me now button and an automated service will call to give you your PIN. Once you have this, enter it into the PIN field and click Continue.

Step 12: You will then need to log back in.

Step 13: When you sell items on eBay, the website charges a small fee. You now need to choose how you will pay any fees. Select the payment type (and complete card information or PayPal account details if applicable) and click Continue.

Step 14: If you chose to pay via PayPal, you will now need to agree to the PayPal user agreement. When you have read it, click I agree.

A new page will open giving you the chance to review your listing again. Click Edit listing if you want to make changes. Click Place listing if you’re ready for it to be posted on eBay.

Step 15: Your item is now posted. Click Track your listing in My eBay to see if anyone is bidding for or buying your item. You can also click My eBay at the top of the screen at any time to look at these details. Potential buyers may ask you questions about your item via email, so answer them promptly to ensure you get good feedback later.

Step 16: When your item is sold, you’ll receive an email from eBay. Go back to ‘My eBay’ and click Sold. There you’ll see the name of your item as well as the price it sold for. Click Send payment details to send your buyer an invoice, which PayPal prepares automatically if you’re using that method of payment.

Step 17: Once the payment has been received, you’ll receive an email from PayPal. Go to the PayPal website and enter your email address and password to log in to your PayPal account. You’ll see that it’s been credited the total payment minus PayPal’s fee. Click Withdraw and then Withdraw funds to your bank account to transfer the payment to your bank account.

Step 18: Make sure you pack your item securely and post it within the time specified. Once you’ve sent your item, go back to ‘My eBay’ and click Sold. Click More actions on the right-hand side of the screen. You’ll then be able to click Mark as dispatched, which will let the buyer know that the item has been sent.

How to Sell and Advertise on Ebay

How to Advertise on Ebay: Ebay Marketing Guide For Beginners

One of the main reasons why people choose to advertise on eBay is that products have great exposure to millions and millions of people who are already looking to buy. To make the most of the advertising capabilities available on the site, you can create promoted listings. This is the main form of paid advertising available on the site, and promoted listings are optimized for greater visibility by as much as 30% amongst potential customers who are already interested in the kinds of things you are selling. Once you have your account set up, you can simply navigate to the Promotional Boxes tab, which will appear at the top of every page on the domain as long as you are logged in.

From there, you can enter your payment information and decide your budget by selecting which percentage of the sale price will be allocated to the platform. Another benefit of choosing to advertise on eBay is that you only need to pay for the promoted listing once your item sells, which also makes it cost effective to advertise on eBay. Your account is charged only once a customer clicks the item and makes the purchase within 30 days of launching the ad. Ads are automatically generated from your existing product listings, and this makes learning how to advertise on eBay quite simple, as no additional creativity is needed! When you advertise on eBay, the platform gives you flexibility in how to manage your campaigns as well. You can keep stock of each campaign manually, or oversee all of them in bulk. To monitor the success of your promoted listing and to take stock of what is working and what isn’t in your eBay marketing strategy, you can easily access performance data from your eBay account dashboard.

Understanding how to advertise on eBay extends beyond the basics, however. For example, when using the Promoted Listings tool to advertise on eBay, there are ways to get strategic and generate even more sales. Try promoting items that coincide with the seasons. If you have a women’s apparel shop, promote your new line of bathing suits during the spring and summer months. Lastly, always remember to test and experiment a bit with your Promoted Listings, keeping an eye on the reports so that you can make data-driven decisions and optimize sales.
How to Sell on eBay

eBay was one of the first ecommerce platforms of its kind. On the website, regular people can post and sell whatever they please, and shoppers bid auction-style for the products. Nowadays, selling on eBay also includes items that are marked at fixed prices. Because of the fact that the site is set up by nature to facilitate transactions from person to person, selling on eBay is quite simple and accessible. The first step of figuring out how to sell on eBay is to simply set up a seller account by filling in your basic information. Once you do that, you’re free to create your listings and begin selling on eBay!

As for the listings themselves, much of the same guidelines apply when it comes to writing excellent product descriptions with clear information and lots of details. Be sure to search around a bit on eBay for products like yours to get a sense of pricing standards. Also, take some time to familiarize yourself with the rules for sellers as certain items and promotions are prohibited including counterfeit items, replicas, and chance listings like raffles or contests.

One of the benefits of listing on a well-established marketplace like eBay as a platform for selling products with your ecommerce business is that you already have access to lots more traffic just by choosing to use the site. Especially if you’re just starting out in the world of ecommerce, selling on eBay can be useful because you don’t have to worry about attracting that initial customer base on your own. Of course, knowing how to sell on eBay successfully does require that you keep track of the metrics. You can monitor or edit your listings from the ‘Sell’ tab on your eBay account. Be sure to stay attentive to customer comments and questions in order to build credibility and improve the shopping experience with your ecommerce shop.

Note that while it’s great for some reasons to use a platform that is already so well established and well networked to list your merchandise, selling on eBay comes with some constraints and downsides as well. You have to pay listing fees to be featured on the site, and you are responsible for handling the shipping and fulfillment of all orders. That in mind, the eBay checkout system provides a streamlined and reliable payment channel for carrying out transactions between you and your customers. If any issues arise, you have the eBay customer support team at your disposal. Now that you know how to sell on eBay, it’s time to think about your products.
Where to Find Products

Perhaps the biggest downside to eBay is that you will have to figure out all the shipping and fulfillment aspects of your ecommerce business on your own. This isn’t much of a problem in the beginning, though, especially if you have specific products in mind that you’d like to sell. However, if you are still trying to think of things to sell on eBay or if you have a low starting budget, we recommend considering dropshipping as an alternative to the traditional ecommerce model. If you set up shop using a reputable ecommerce web platform like Shopify, then dropshipping allows you to import products from third party suppliers into your online shop. Then, once a customer makes an order, your supplier will ship directly to them, meaning you never have to handle, stock, or store any of the merchandise yourself.

Dropshipping is great because it allows you to focus your efforts on the things that will truly help you grow your business and cause you to stand out from your competitors like developing an irresistible brand and launching the best possible marketing campaign. Plus, with apps like Oberlo, things get even easier as its many features and automation tools take care of the most time-consuming tasks of running a successful dropshipping business for you. For example, Oberlo will automatically fulfill orders and send your customers their tracking information directly to their email inboxes. You can get Oberlo in the Shopify app store, and try it for one month completely free!
