Alien: Covenant is getting its own VR game created by Ridley Scott himself
If you're itching to get up-close and personal with a xenomorph, Sir Ridley Scott has the perfect VR game for you on the way.
Scott and the team at 20th Century Fox's Innovation Lab are putting the finishing touches on a VR experience set within the terrifying world of Alien: Covenant.
Described as a "dread-inducing journey" by developers, this game follows in the footsteps of the Fox Innovation Lab's previous movie tie-in The Martian VR Experience - also based on the Scott film.
Here's how the developers describe Alien: Covenant's interactive adventure: "Viewers will discover the true meaning of terror as they navigate through horrifying alien environments and a story where every decision could mean the difference between life and death."
Well, that sounds ominous - and oddly appropriate for a franchise based on chest-bursting, acid-spewing aliens whose one goal in life is kill, kill, kill.
Sir Ridley is producing this game, with direction from The Collection and Feast's David Karlak. There is no release date yet, but Alien: Covenant's gaming experience will be available as a paid title on leading VR platforms (via Variety).
Covenant doubles as Sir Ridley's sequel to Prometheus and his attempt to "resurrect" the franchise after the debacle that was Alien vs. Predator (and its even-worse sequel).
"No-one actually asked where [the aliens] came from in the three subsequent movies, which is kind of ridiculous," Sir Ridley recently told Digital Spy. "That's why good writers are good writers, because they'll ask a basic question like that and make that into a scenario.
"So we did Prometheus - that heaved it off the ground - and Covenant is a follow-through to Prometheus. So we now know who created this, and why, and the next one's a joining up of the storyline. It touches on mortality, immortality and the real question of who created us and why."
'Alien' is coming to VR
Fox, the studio behind Ridley Scott's upcoming "Alien: Covenant" film, plans a "horrifying" virtual reality experience to go with it.
It's not quite as uncomfortable as an alien popping out of your chest, but an official "Alien" VR experience may bring you closer to a screeching, drooling alien maw then ever before.
Twentieth Century Fox, the studio releasing Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant" movie in May, said Tuesday it will also produce a virtual reality experience to go along with film.
It called the experience "a dread-inducing journey" for viewers to "discover the true meaning of terror as they navigate through horrifying alien environments ... where every decision could mean the difference between life and death."
Fun!
Virtual reality is an entertainment format that uses responsive headsets to make viewers feel like they're in the middle of the action. Though VR systems have limited reach, mega investments by tech giants like Facebook, Samsung, Sony and Google have also sent big names in Hollywood rushing to try making content for VR.
Fox has been the most aggressive of the major US studios in the new medium.
"Alien: Covenant" VR is the latest effort by Fox to match a virtual reality release to one of its films. A VR experience paired with "The Martian" -- another Ridley Scott film -- went on sale in November.
The company didn't detail release timing for the "Alien" VR experience. The theatrical release of traditional film is May 19. Fox released the "The Martian" VR experience in November, more than a year after the original movie's opening weekend. But the lag was partly because Fox had to wait for hardware makers like Sony's Playstation and Facebook's Oculus to release more VR systems with hand controllers.
Ridley Scott, Fox Innovation Lab Team Up for ‘Alien: Covenant’ Virtual Reality Experience
Virtual reality is going to get scary in 2017: The Fox Innovation Lab and filmmaker Ridley Scott have teamed up to make an “Alien: Covenant” virtual reality (VR) experience.
The experience will be available as a paid title on major VR platforms. There’s no word on an exact release date yet, but it’s worth noting that “Alien:Covenant” the movie will be released in May.
What we do know is that it aims to scare the pants off its viewers: The Fox Innovation Lab team describes the experience as “a dread-inducing journey into the depths of the Alien universe.”
The rest of the news release sounds equally unnerving: “Viewers will discover the true meaning of terror as they navigate through horrifying alien environments and a story where every decision could mean the difference between life and death.”
The “Alien: Covenant” VR experience will be executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by David Karlak. It’s a cooperation between Scott’s RSA Films, the Fox Innovation Lab and MPC VR, a Technicolor Company.
This will be the second major VR title from the Fox Innovation Lab. The 20th Century Fox R&D unit unveiled “The Martian VR Experience” at CES in Las Vegas a year ago, and has since released it on HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift.
Unlike other studios, Fox isn’t looking to just use VR as a way to advertise its movies. “We see VR as a new media opportunity, not just a promotional vehicle,” 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Fox Innovation Lab President Mike Dunn recently told Variety. “Our intention from the moment we developed our business plan was to be in the commercial VR business.”
