Margot Robbie's Tonya Harding Transformation for 'I, Tonya'

The biopic will chronicle the events leading up to the scandal between Harding and Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Margot Robbie's transformation into Tonya Harding is complete.

It was announced last spring that the Suicide Squad star would be lacing up to play the Olympian figure skater with tabloid notoriety for the biopic I, Tonya, and new photos from the film's set show Robbie settling into the titular role.

Robbie is seen sporting Harding's '90s hairstyle and wardrobe in an appearance that makes it hard to differentiate the actress from the blue-collar Harding she portrays.

The film from director Craig Gillespie will chronicle the events leading up to the infamous scandal, when Olympian figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a man who struck her a few inches above the knee at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The attack was traced back to Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly (to be played by Sebastian Stan), and her bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt.

Harding struck a plea agreement, admitting to conspiring to hinder prosecution, and was banned from U.S. Figure Skating and stripped of her 1994 U.S. Championship. Her career finished, she later became a minor celebrity known for a sex tape, wrestling and boxing career and multiple marriages.

Allison Janney will portray LaVona, Harding's mother.

Margot Robbie undergoes complete transformation as Tonya Harding for biopic

MARGOT Robbie has undergone a complete transformation for her role as disgraced US figure skater Tonya Harding.
Filming for the biopic — I, Tonya — kicked off this month and the 26-year-old was spotted on the set baring a striking resemblance to the Olympian.

As well as a frizzy blonde wig and very ‘90s jeans, Robbie appears to have bulked up the top half of her body with flesh-coloured padding for the role.

It was announced last year Robbie would play Tonya Harding in the biopic. Harding was a champion figure skater who is best known for her role in the 1994 scandal, when her main competition at the Olympics, Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked by a man hired by Harding’s husband, Jeff Gillooly, to break her leg at the U.S. national championships.

Margot Robbie's role as Tonya Harding in the biopic, "I, Tonya," was announced last spring, but back then it was hard to imagine the 26-year-old "Suicide Squad" star sporting the former figure skater's signature look — complete with spiral-curled hair, bouncy bangs and '90s wardrobe.

But now there's no need to imagine it.

Robbie was spotted on the set of the film Monday bearing a remarkable resemblance to Harding — from that unmistakable hairstyle to her high-waist, stonewashed jeans.

The Australian actress wore padding underneath a heather blue sweater, and her face appeared altered for the role, too, with noticeably fuller cheeks than usual.

"I, Tonya" will take a closer look at the life of Harding, a two-time Olympian and figure skating champion, and the events that led up to a January 1994 attack on her biggest competitor, Nancy Kerrigan.

It was Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, and bodyguard who ordered the assault on Kerrigan after a practice session at the U.S Championships in Detroit.

Gillooly was sentenced to two years in prison for the attack, while Harding was stripped of her title and banned from participating in any United States Figure Skating Association events for life.

"I, Tonya" — which also stars Allison Janney but does not appear to have cast the role of Kerrigan yet — is set to be released in 2018.
