MSNBC hires Greta Van Susteren for evening show
NEW YORK (AP) — MSNBC says it has hired former Fox News host Greta Van Susteren to host a daily, Washington-based news program at the dinner hour.
Just like Tucker Carlson, who Fox named as Megyn Kelly's prime-time replacement on Thursday, Van Susteren completes the cable news hat trick: hosting shows on CNN, Fox and MSNBC. Her show will air at 6 p.m. ET.
A lawyer, Van Susteren got her start in television for CNN analyzing O.J. Simpson's trial, and that evolved into a regular role. After more than a decade at Fox, she left abruptly in late summer following a financial disagreement, saying Fox no longer felt like home.
MSNBC had an open time slot following the end of Mark Halperin and John Heilemann's political show.
Greta Van Susteren To Get Nightly Show On MSNBC
Former Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren will have a new show on MSNBC, the network announced Thursday.
Van Susteren will have a daily weekday show that airs 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. called “For The Record with Greta” ― a variation on the name of her Fox show, which was called “On The Record.” The show begins on Monday and will cover “news coverage and analysis of the day’s top headlines spanning politics and beyond,” according to a network release.
“I’m thrilled to start my next chapter at MSNBC,” Van Susteren said in a statement. “The network is the right destination for the smart news and analysis I hope to deliver every day, and I look forward to joining the talented journalists and analysts I respect there.”
The announcement comes days after Megyn Kelly, Van Susteren’s former colleague at Fox, announced she would join NBC.
Van Susteren abruptly announced she was leaving Fox in September. She initially defended former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes after he was accused of sexual harassment, and New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman reported that she left the network because she was “troubled by the culture” Ailes built.

The cable news shakeups began with Megyn Kelly, who reportedly turned down many millions to extend her contract with Fox News to accept a deal with NBC worth $TK. Tucker Carlson, the former bowtie-wearer bottled by the same vintner as Sean Hannity but given less time to age, was then given her slot in the network’s “powerful prime-time lineup.” And now it’s being reported that the aftershocks are continuing, as Greta Van Susteren, former host of Fox News’s On the Record, is moving to MSNBC to host a show called—find something to grab onto—For the Record.
“With all due respect, With All Due Respect,” I imagine MSNBC president Phil Griffin telling With All Due Respect hosts Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, “We’re moving Greta Van Susteren’s On the Record to your canceled show’s timeslot. And for the record, we’re changing the name to For the Record.”
This is big news for the people involved, as Susteren, Kelly, and Carlson’s moves will no doubt result in bigger paychecks, but for us (or those of us who watch cable news), the job changes will result in nothing but minor shifts in our remote control habits. Despite the changes to their business cards—barely noticeable adjustments in cardstock weight and color palettes—they’re still just three gigantic, shrieking faces on our TV screens, able to be watched or avoided with relative ease.
