'Flip or Flop' star Christina El Moussa speaks out about split, future of HGTV show
"Flip or Flop" host Christina El Moussa said she is doing "really, really good" and continuing to film her hit HGTV show with her estranged husband, Tarek El Moussa, as the couple goes through a high-profile divorce.
"There’s a lot of false stories and a lot of hype, but in the end we’re just normal, nice people who just want to be the best parents and coworkers that we can be,” Moussa, 33, said today on “Good Morning America.”
Tarek El Moussa filed for divorce from his wife of seven years last month.
El Moussa said she and Tarek will continue to work together on-air while divorcing behind the scenes. They are currently filming season 7 of "Flip or Flop."
"We have so much fun on set and we look forward to continuing the show," said El Moussa. "We met at work so we worked together before we ever started dating."
"It’s our normal," she said of her working situation with Tarek, with whom she also runs a seminar company. The El Moussas appeared smiling alongside each other at a speaking engagement at the 2017 Investor Summit in Las Vegas earlier this month.
The former couple have two young children, an 18-month old son and 6-year-old daughter. Together they overcame infertility and Tarek's battle with thyroid cancer during their marriage.
"Our kids are transitioning well," said El Moussa. "Tarek and I are friends and we have a lot of support from our family."
The El Moussas first addressed their split last December, telling ABC News in a statement at the time that they had experienced "challenges in their marriage." The estranged couple also confirmed that police had come to their home last year "in an abundance of caution," but added, "there was no violence and no charges were filed."
ABC News corroborated that information with local police.
HGTV, the network that has aired "Flip or Flop" since 2013, said in December that no production changes have been made to the show's schedule.
"We admire and appreciate Tarek and Christina's great work on 'Flip or Flop.' When it comes to matters related to their own family, we respect their privacy and honor any decision that works best for them and their children," the network said previously in a statement. "HGTV is currently airing episodes of 'Flip or Flop' and the series will continue production as scheduled.”
El Moussa said she is also at work on a book that will document "things I’ve gone through and what’s really helped me cope."
"I get so many nice messages from people that have gone through similar situations and just the positive outreach, it’s really helped me get through this," she said of fans' support.
Flip or Flop's Christina El Moussa on How Her Marriage Fell Apart: 'We Weren't Even Driving to Set Together'
It’s been nearly a year since Christina El Moussa secretly split from her husband Tarek and now the HGTV star is finally opening up about what went wrong in her marriage and how she’s finally found happiness.
The reality couple — who share daughter Taylor, 6, and son Braydon, 18 months — officially separated in May 2016 following an alarming incident involving a gun at the family’s home, but Christina says their marital problems started long before that.
“Like any couple, we had our share of issues,” she admits. “But we went through a lot in a short amount of time.”
When their Flip or Flop series launched in 2013, the pair was still getting adjusted to fame when Tarek was suddenly diagnosed with thyroid cancer. As he went through radiation treatment, Christina also began a grueling struggle to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization and suffered a miscarriage in 2014.
After welcoming son Brayden, the mounting pressures of running their business piled up, and Christina went back to work just four weeks after giving birth. “It was too soon for me,” she says. “I was overwhelmed. The tension between me and Tarek was high.”
“We weren’t able to properly communicate anymore,” she says. “It got to the point where we weren’t even driving to set together.”
After news of their split finally became public in December, Christina says she felt relief. “I think the separation process begins long before people actually separate,” she says now. “So by the time we officially did, I felt like a weight was lifted off me.”
Tarek officially filed for divorce on Jan. 9, but the couple has been candid about their decision to move on and date other people.
“Tarek and I don’t discuss each other’s personal lives,” she says. “It is what it is and we are going through a divorce and eventually we will be dating other people. I’m happy for him and whatever steps he takes in his life and I just hope he’s happy.”
As for what’s next for the newly single star, she has no plans to stop working with her soon-to-be ex anytime soon, though she’s also pursuing her own projects.
“It’s invigorating to know I am starting over,” she says. “It’s fun to be able to create my own destiny right now.”
As for the couple’s children, Christina said she and Tarek’s “primary” focus will always be their children.
“We’re just normal, nice people who just, you know, want to be the best parents and coworkers that we can be,” Christina said during a Tuesday appearance on Good Morning America, noting that co-parenting with Tarek is going well.
“Our kids are amazing … Our kids are transitioning well,” Christina said. “Tarek and I are friends and we have a lot of support from our family. The kids are doing great.”
‘Flip Or Flop’s’ Christina El Moussa Reveals What Led To Split From Tarek
“Flip or Flop” star Christina El Moussa is finally opening up about what led to her split from husband Tarek after eight years of marriage.
In a new interview with People magazine, the HGTV star said the couple had been facing marital problems long before calling it quits in May 2016. (The separation followed an altercation involving a gun, which the exes called an “unfortunate misunderstanding” in a joint statement.)
“Like any couple, we had our share of issues,” Christina told People. “But we went through a lot in a short amount of time.”
Those problems included Tarek’s sudden diagnosis with testicular and thyroid cancer and Christina’s struggles to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization. After suffering a miscarriage in 2014, the couple welcomed their second child in September 2015.
Christina said returning to work four weeks after giving birth complicated things even further.
“I was overwhelmed. The tension between me and Tarek was high,” she said. “We weren’t able to properly communicate anymore. It got to the point where we weren’t even driving to set together.”
Today, Tarek’s cancer is in remission and the pair are currently filming season seven of their hit HGTV show. Earlier this month, Tarek shared an pic of the couple at a recent house-flipping seminar, ending the caption with the hashtag #lovespeakingtogether.
In an interview with the “Today” show Tuesday morning, Tarek admitted that working with his ex can be challenging at times but the pair make it work.
“I’m not gonna lie, I’m not gonna say it was easy,” he said. “It’s like anything, there’s challenges in life. I mean, we love filming ― that’s our job. We’ve been doing it a long time, and we love releasing a good product for our fans. We just had to fight through it, and be the best we could, and I think it turned out great.”
