Here's How To Best Prepare For Pokemon GO's Gen 2 Update
Niantic shocked the Pokémon GO community yesterday when it was revealed that after months of leaks and rumors, Gold and Silver Gen 2 were coming to the game by the end of the week. While we don’t know exactly when they will make their debut (signs point to the 17th or 18th), it helps to be prepared before it arrives.
For dedicated players who want to make the most out of the Gen 2 expansion right away, I’ve compiled a few ideas of how to do that. Some may be common sense, others not as much. Given that less people played Gold and Silver than Red and Blue, and way more people play GO than have ever played any of the handheld Pokémon games, there might be a few things to learn.
Here are some ways to get prepared for Gen 2’s arrival, both resource and strategy-wise.
Save Your Poké Balls And Items
This may be sort of a weird piece of advice, but honestly, one of the best things you might want to do, depending on your current inventory situation, is to play very little of the game over the next day or two, because every Poké Ball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, Berry, Lure or Incense you use could be used instead when Gen 2 comes out which will likely produce better rewards. Yes, you may want to play to stockpile certain candy for evolutions (I’ll get to that in a second), but for the most part, if you’re not drowning in items, it’s going to be better to use as little as you can for the catch-fest that’s about to take place with 80 new Pokémon in the wild.
Stockpile Candy For Specific Gen 2 Evolutions
I wrote about this a long time ago when it seemed like Gen 2 was about to fully drop in December (instead we just got the babies), but the same list is relevant now. There are a number of current Pokémon that will have new relevance with the Gen 2 update because they will have new evolutions that will probably require a lot of candy. As such, you’ll want to be looking for these Pokémon specifically ahead of release, while you can:
Poliwag (evolves into Politoed)
Slowpoke (evolves into Slowking)
Zubat (evolves into Crobat)
Eevee (evolves into Espeon and Umbreon)
Horsea (evolves into Kingdra)
Porygon (evolves into Porygon2)
Scyther (evolves into Scizor)
Chansey (evolves into Blissey)
Onix (evolves into Steelix)
Oddish (evolves into Bellossom)
The current Valentine’s event that’s going on now will give you greater access to Chansey and Porgyon, so catch all of those you can as you will probably need at least 50 candy for an evolution. And save your current high IV Eevees for Espeon and Umbreon. I really hope Onix gets a buff so Steelix is relevant, but either way, he’ll look awesome.
Again, I wouldn’t go nuts using a ton of items to try and catch these, but if you are going to play, these are the ones to go after specifically.
Hatch All Your Current Eggs
This one is relatively straightforward. While I’m not positive that Niantic can’t change existing eggs into new kinds, chances are that the current eggs you have will not be able to hatch Gen 2 Pokémon. As such, you should burn through all of them as soon as you’re able, and not pick up any more from PokéStops until Gen 2 launches. I mean, it’s up to you of course, but if not, you might be stuck with a number of Gen 1 eggs that are probably not going to hatch anything super cool, so save yourself some time and kilometers and just wait a few days to get some new eggs lined up.
Do Some Storage Space Spring Cleaning
While it would certainly be nice and logical for Niantic to gift players 50-100 new Pokémon/item storage slots with the arrival of Gen 2 and new items, that’s not going to happen. Instead, Niantic has announced that for the next two weeks or so, storage upgrades are half-price at a dollar per 50 slots, but that’s it, no freebies.
It’s time to start cleaning house. For your inventory, I would keep all of your balls, but unless you’re a gym fanatic, I think it’s not a bad idea to clear out a majority of your potions and revives in favor of balls and berries, given that no changes are being made to the (not great) gym scene any time soon.
For your Pokémon storage space, everyone probably has their own sort of clutter there, but if there’s every a time to buckle down and clean out those crappy duplicates you really don’t need, it’s now. When Gen 2 comes out, you’re going to be catching pretty much everything you see for weeks, and you will fill up your box before you know it. Obviously don’t go crazy and make any huge sacrifices, but I’m guessing 95% of players have a lot of junk Pokémon they’ve been too lazy to assess and throw into Professor’s meat grinder, so take a half hour, figure out what’s worth keeping and trash the rest.
Learn The New Powerhouses
This one is a bit tricky, because it’s not clear who exactly will be super powerful in the GO version of Gen 2, and also the game will obviously not launch with the game’s legendary/mythics, given that we don’t even have those for Gen 1 yet.
There’s going to be a lot of debate about who the “best” Gen 2 Pokémon are, but there are certainly some fan favorites out there. It’s been awhile, but from what I remember playing Gold and Silver, some of the best ones were:
Tyranitar (a third stage evolution)
Scizor (evolves from Scyther)
Umbreon and Espeon (evolve from Eevee)
Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Megaium (the final stages of the new starters)
Houndoom (the badass fire dog)
Heracross (an oddly popular bug)
Crobat (a surprisingly useful evolution of Zubat)
Wobuffet (crazypants defense based Pokémon)
There are probably more, but those are ones to look out for specifically as all this starts. No telling if each will actually be great like the Lapras/Vaporeon/Dragonite/Gyarados/Rhydon/Snorlax Gen 1 powerhouses, but it’s certainly possible.
Assemble An Arctic Hunting Outfit
Obviously this last point depends on where you live, but it is still the dead of winter for most regions right now, and it’s far from the July launch window of the original game. It’s why many people thought Gen 2 wouldn’t arrive until the weather thawed in the spring, but here we are.
I have previously published a post about how to play Pokémon GO in the winter, so I won’t recap all of that, I’ll just direct you there, but seriously, you might want to chop the finger or thumb off one of your gloves. Just saying.

Update: Niantic has now formally announced the update's release and suggested the 80-plus new Pokemon are available. It also provided more extensive notes regarding what the update consists of, as listed below:

A new update for Pokemon Go is out now, bringing some small quality-of-life changes to the game, but not the new Generation 2 creatures (yet).
Chief among them, you can now easily access your different Poke Balls and berries right from the encounter screen. As pictured below, two new buttons have been added to the screen, saving you the trouble of opening the item list to access these commonly used things. There's also new music during encounters.
Another small change is to the Evolve button when viewing a Pokemon. This now shows a silhouette of the creature you'll obtain if you do choose to evolve the one you have.
Update notes for the iOS version don't go into much further detail about what's new. A new night-mode map is now available, and various bugs and typos have been fixed. If you're connecting your phone to an Apple Watch, the connection should be more stable.
All of this is a precursor to the major addition coming very soon, which is new Pokemon from Gold and Silver. 80 new ones are on the way, including starters Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. These are set to be available in-game before the end of the week, but it appears they haven't shown up alongside this new update.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen new creatures from Gold and Silver, but this is the first time any of them have been out there in the wild. It’s a breath of fresh air for trainers that caught all — or most — of the original Pokémon months ago and have been waiting for new creatures ever since.
The update also brings new changes to the way that Pokémon encounters are handled, two new berry types to make life easier for aspiring trainer, and new customization options to keep all the characters from looking exactly the same. It may not be the dramatic improvement some were hoping for, but all of these quality-of-life improvements were most certainly needed.
It remains to be seen whether or not the infusion of new creatures can provide a new burst of life for the ailing mega-hit. Pokémon GO has suffered from a flagging user base ever since the first few weeks, and many have been looking forward to the introduction of Gen 2 monsters as a way to bring the game back to the top of the app charts. Many long-awaited features are still missing, however, including trading, PvP battles and a new combat system to replace the odd and sometimes confusing battles currently in the game.
Will Pokémon GO be able to recover its status as the undisputed champion of the App Store? Or will it continue to lose ground to games that cater to an obsessively competitive crowd like Game of War: Fire Age and Clash Royale? We’ll see. This game hasn’t always had an easy time of it, but it remains one of the most unique experiences available in video games today.
