Matthew McConaughey Lectures Hollywood on Trump, and Breitbart Pounces

Amid the din of celebrities speaking out against President Trump, add one conciliatory voice: That of Matthew McConaughey, who said in a televised BBC interview that Hollywood should “embrace” Mr. Trump’s election and work with him.

The interview, broadcast on Sunday, might have quietly faded into the forgotten quarters of the internet. But Breitbart News, the right-wing news network, picked it up Wednesday night, packaging the video clip with an article headlined “Matthew McConaughey to Hollywood: ‘Embrace’ Donald Trump.”

The interview, on the BBC’s “The Andrew Marr Show,” was later covered by outlets including Vulture, Entertainment Weekly and the British newspaper The Independent. Overnight, searches for Mr. McConaughey and Mr. Trump rose on Google.

The Breitbart site reports and aggregates politics and entertainment news, often injecting a conservative viewpoint, and it embraced Mr. Trump during the presidential campaign. The network was formerly run by Stephen K. Bannon, who is now Mr. Trump’s chief political strategist.

In response to a question from Mr. Marr about whether it was time for America’s cultural elite to give Mr. Trump “a break,” Mr. McConaughey said, “It’s a very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we’ve ever had.”

“At the same time,” he added, “it’s time for us to embrace, shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years.”

Mr. McConaughey had appeared on the program to promote his role in a new movie, “Gold.”

Online, mentions of Mr. McConaughey increased rapidly early Thursday. They came in swift and conflicting. One Twitter user thanked the Oscar-winning actor.

Mr. McConaughey is one of the rare stars to speak in more amicable terms about the new president, who has drawn widespread scorn from late-night hosts, comedians and actors.

At this year’s awards shows, celebrities including Meryl Streep and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have used their acceptance speeches to criticize the president for his policies and behavior. Last month, Nicole Kidman drew criticism after telling the BBC, “he’s now elected, and we as a country need to support whoever is the president because that’s what the country’s based on.” She later clarified that she had meant her comments as a general call in favor of democratic processes, rather than as an endorsement of Mr. Trump.

Matthew McConaughey: It's time to embrace Trump

If you ask Matthew McConaughey, it's time for the country to get "alright, alright, alright" with President Donald Trump.

The Oscar-winning actor suggested as much in a recent interview with the BBC's Andrew Marr to promote his new film, "Gold."

Marr said it seems that a theme of the film is "small time, central redneck America sticking one up to the snotty East Coast elites, as it were."

He then noted that many actors and artists "dump on Trump" and asked McConaughey whether it's time to give Trump a break.

"Well, they don't have a choice now, he's our President," McConaughey said. "It's very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we've ever had. At the same time, it's time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years."

No matter how much people may have disagreed with candidate Trump, McConaughey said, it's now "time to think about how constructive can you be because he's our President for the next four years at least."

The star's remarks were hailed and criticized on social media.

It is unclear whether the interview was taped before or after Trump's issued his controversial travel ban.
McConaughey's wife, model Camila Alves, was born in Brazil and became a US citizen in 2015.

Matthew McConaughey Thinks It’s Time to Accept Trump

Nearly two weeks after Donald Trump’s inauguration, Matthew McConaughey says it is time to accept him as president. In an interview with ChannelFi (per Entertainment Weekly), the Oscar winner said that Hollywood “[doesn’t] have much of a choice” when it comes to accepting Donald Trump as leader of the free world.

“He’s our president,” he said, before admitting to the concerns this administration poses. “And it’s very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we’ve ever had. At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace, shake hands with this fact, and be constructive with him over the next four years.”

McConaughey’s comments follow two weeks of celebrities speaking out against Trump since the inauguration, including the several bold-faced names who joined the Women’s March on Washington and its sister marches around the country on January 21. America Ferrera, for example, reminded the crowd of marchers in Washington, D.C., that they were gathered “across the country and the world to say, ‘Mr. Trump, we refuse.’ ”

Although many actors and artists are calling for resistance against Trump, his policies, and controversial executive orders, McConaughey is not alone in his stand for staying open-minded about the new administration.

Last month, Nicole Kidman told the BBC that the best way the American people can support their country is to support their president.

“So I just say, he’s now elected, and we as a country need to support whoever is the president because that’s what the country’s based on,” she said.

Kidman later corrected sources who referred to her remarks as an endorsement of Trump when she told Access Hollywood that she had been simply expressing her feelings about how a successful democracy works.

“I was trying to stress that I believe in democracy and the American Constitution, and it was that simple,” she said.

McConaughey strikes a similar tone with his words, calling for a constructive look at the actions of the 45th president.

‘So, even those who most strongly may disagree with his principles or things he’s said and done — which is another thing, we’ll see what he does compared to what he had said — no matter how much you even disagreed along the way, it’s time to think about how constructive can you be,” he said. “Because he’s our president for the next four years. At least.”
