Tyus Battle hits 3-pointer at buzzer as Syracuse basketball beats Clemson

Clemson, S.C. -- Tyus Battle had made one shot all the night, but the freshman guard drilled the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Syracuse Orange stunned Clemson 82-81 here at Littlejohn Coliseum on Tuesday night.

Battle had struggled the entire game. He had missed five of his six attempts from the field prior to his clutch shot as time expired.

Syracuse trailed 81-79 after Donte Grantham hit a 15-foot jumper to put Clemson ahead with 7 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Syracuse got the ball upcourt. Tyler Lydon got the ball at the top of the key and drove into the lane. As a pair of Clemson defenders collapsed on him, Lydon spotted Battle in the corner to his right. Battle had no choice but to put up the shot. The ball splashed through the net as the final horn sounded.

Syracuse is now 16-9 after winning five straight games. The Orange is 8-4 in the ACC. The 5-game win streak is Syracuse's longest of the season. The Orange won its first four games of the season.

Clemson fell 13-10 overall and 3-8 in the ACC.

Syracuse came from behind for the fourth time in its five-game win streak. The Orange also rallied to beat Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Virginia.

Clemson smacked Syracuse with a 10-0 run to take a 61-53 lead. Clemson senior Jaron Blossomgame led the charge, scoring eight of the Tigers' points during the rally. Clemson would push its lead to nine points at 70-61 on Marcquise Reed's 3-pointer with 7:27 left in the game.

Syracuse staged a desperate rally. The Orange got to within 75-74 on Lydon's dunk with 4 minutes remaining.

The Orange still trailed 79-77 with under a minute to go, but Andrew White stole Clemson's inbounds pass. White's steal led to a pair of Lydon free throws with 35 seconds left to tie the game.

Clemson called timeout and set up Grantham's shot with 7 seconds remaining.

White led Syracuse with 23 points. Lydon finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Taurean Thompson scored all 14 of his points in the second half. The freshman forward had 12 of SU's first 15 points after halftime. But Thompson picked up his third foul with 12:44 left and had to go to the bench.
