Netflix is rolling out a button for skipping the opening credits
Netflix is rolling out a button that lets you skip the opening credits on some television shows. This week some Twitter users spotted a “skip intro” button that appears when you hover over the title sequence for shows including Netflix originals House of Cards and Iron Fist, and Mad Men (a third-party show). Both those shows open each episode with the title sequence, making it unclear whether you’ll be able to skip title sequences in shows with cold opens.
The first mention of the button we could find is in a Reddit post from 22 days ago. So far, the button has only been spotted on the web. Rolling it out more broadly would require app updates on the many platforms where Netflix is available. We’ve reached out to the company asking for more information.
Skipping the opening credits is a long-standing request of many Netflix users, who are prone to binge-watching shows and would rather not watch the House of Cards smooth jazz time lapse eight times in a single day. And if episodes are auto-playing for you, in many cases the opening sequence will be skipped automatically.
As it so happens, I never skip the credits — there is an art to the title sequence, and even the mediocre ones these days still establish a mood. If you’re watching eight episodes in a row, wouldn’t you happily take that 60 seconds to check your phone while listening to the theme music? I would!
Anyway, you don’t have to now. The skip intro button is now live.
Some lucky Netflix members have a cool new ‘skip intro’ button to make binge-watching better on the streaming service
For viewers who are binge-watching a show, it can be annoying to have to watch the opening credits and hear the theme song numerous times, so Netflix is testing an option that allows viewers to skip the intro altogether.
As we’ve seen with Netflix when it comes to show ratings numbers, the company is keeping details of the feature close to the vest.
A Netflix spokesperson told CNN that the feature is one of “hundreds” of tests that the company conducts each year.
“We’re looking at what does or doesn’t enhance the viewing experience,” said the rep, who declined to comment further on the “skip intro” button and when testing on it began.
The “skip intro” option doesn’t appear for all members. If you do have it, it can be found in the lower-right corner of your screen at the beginning of episodes. For those who don’t have access to the button, keep in mind that Netflix already automatically skips the intro to TV shows when it recognizes that you’re watching multiple episodes in a row — this new method just takes that feature and turns it into a button.
It’s not clear whether it’s available for all shows. So far, users have said that it’s available on “Orange Is the New Black,” “House of Cards,” “Iron Fist,” “The Office,” and “Mad Men.”
