Nobody's Buying Jumanji's Excuse For Karen Gillan's Skimpy Outfit

When the images from the upcoming Jumanji movie were released, fans pointed out the elephant in the room: why was Karen Gillan's character in such ridiculous clothing? The actress, surrounded by appropriately-dressed male characters (played by Kevin Hart, The Rock, and Jack Black), was clad in a tight crop top, short-shorts, and knee-high boots. You know, hiking clothes?

Gillan was quick to respond to the backlash on Twitter.

"Jumanji! Yes I'm wearing child sized clothes and YES there is a reason!" she wrote. "The pay off is worth it, I promise!"

She later addressed the controversy in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

"I’ve experienced something similar when I worked on Doctor Who and there was such an uproar about my costume when that was first revealed, so I thought it was happening all over again," she said. "But I have to say, I'd never take on a role that was truly gratuitous for no reason. There’s a really valid reason why she’s wearing that. My character is really not happy about it!"

The reason was finally revealed on monday night at Sony's CinemaCon panel. It turns out, the story doesn't follow real life characters, but instead four high school students who get trapped inside the characters of an old video game. Her outfit is apparently satire of the sexist ways video games dress women.

While the twist on the premise is cool, people don't entirely think it justifies her outfit. After all, if you're pointing out how ridiculous it is that video games dress women up in skimpy clothing and make them run around by...dressing a woman up in skimpy clothing and making her run around, then it's hard to see what good you're doing, even if the intentions are there.

"Karen Gillan is dress3d [sic] like that in Jumanji 'because it's a video game'? Ugh," one Twitter user wrote. "Some of us fight that sexism in games. This doesn't help."

"I guaran-fucking-tee you the dude who turns into Karen Gillan in the new Jumanji is sexist but then learns what it's like to be objectified," another wrote.

"The 'game' will just be the patriarchy unleashed," someone else added.

As of right now, fans aren't impressed. However, pictures are pretty much still the only thing we've seen from the upcoming release. There's still plenty of room for the film to redeem itself — we'll just have to wait until December to see how.

The new Jumanji is about a video game, which supposedly explains Karen Gillan’s outfit

Footage from the Jumanji reboot Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was shown at Sony’s CinemaCon panel last night, confirming the long-rumored plot detail that the new film is about a magical video game instead of a magical board game. And you all said the movie industry has no new ideas!

The story reportedly follows four high school students who find an old video game console (console unspecified) while cleaning out a dusty closet during detention and are subsequently transported into the world of the game — and into the bodies of stars Kevin Hart, The Rock, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan (Nick Jonas is also in this movie somewhere, TBD). The game is vintage, hence the dust and the magic and being buried in the back of a closet, which is presumably what The Rock meant when he said there was a logical reason for Karen Gillan’s absurd hiking outfit.

Now that I understand the context, I’m absolutely so impressed by the team’s attention to detail and fidelity to the costuming of (I’m guessing) ‘80s video game characters. What would we even be doing here, with our 2017 reboot of a movie about a game that is sentient or haunted and it’s never clear which, if we weren’t getting the crop tops right?

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, directed by Bad Teacher and Sex Tape’s Jake Kasden, will be released in 3D, IMAX, and normal 2D on December 22nd.

Twist revealed in Jumanji reboot and Karen Gillan's outfit explained

Spoilers (sweetie)* ahead As photos promoting movies go, the one for the reboot of Jumanji raised all sorts of eyebrows when it was released last year.

The picture featured Kevin Hart, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Jack Black fully decked out in proper hiking garb while the only female in the group, Karen Gillan, was wearing a midriff shirt and short shorts in the middle of a jungle.

But now the reason behind the Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy star's outfit has been revealed at CinemaCon, where movie studios show their latest wares to film theatre owners.

Four high-school students find an old video game and each chooses a character to play. The teens become the avatars they selected, so a nerd becomes The Rock's character, and a popular girl becomes Jack Black's character, while a shy girl becomes Gillan, aka the way some female video characters looked in the past.

Kiwi actor Rhy Darby is also in the reboot, which is due for release in New Zealand in January 2018. The movie will be a continuation from the 1995 children's classic starring Robin Williams.
