Cancer patient slams Samantha Bee's 'half-apology' after 'Nazi hair' joke
Kyle Coddington, one of the men mocked for having "Nazi hair" in a segment about Conservative Political Action Conference attendees aired by Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, isn't satisfied with the show's apology — or half-apology, as he called it.
On Thursday, the TBS news satire issued a statement saying that they'd only learned that day that his haircut was due to chemotherapy and radiation treatment for stage 4 brain cancer. Consequently, they apologized and removed him from the segment. (You can watch the offending portion on Outsetmagazine.com, the media organization for which Coddington is a contributor.)
It is unclear whether the apology came directly from Bee or another Full Frontal staffer since it was made on the show's Twitter account rather than her own. However, on Friday morning, Coddington told Fox & Friends that he had not heard from her personally.
"it is kind of a half apology," he told the host of the Fox News Channel morning show. "I would say the effects of this go much further than just insulting me and the illness itself. It's just inconsiderate and very unprofessional to you know lump together anyone who has a certain hairstyle or just by the way they look.”
In a Twitter statement posted late Thursday night, Coddington wrote that he is a registered Democrat who has been "hesitant of supporting Donald Trump from Day 1 and was only 'Never Trump' through the entirety of the 2016 election cycle."
He called out Bee for the language of the apology, saying "half-apologizing for offending someone is not apologizing for making baseless accusations against people because of the way they look. This kind of behavior should be rejected by both sides of the aisle."
Coddington told Fox and Friends it all started when he got a Facebook message from a friend containing a screengrab of him from the Full Frontal segment. "They said, 'She is making fun of you for having Nazi hair. And so I sent the screen shot to my mom who sent it to my sister. And my sister is the one that tweeted it."
Still, Coddington did thank the show for donating $1,000 to his GoFundMe page to help defray his medical expenses both on TV and in his statement.
"It's been an interesting 24 hours, for sure," he said.

The TBS comedy program “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” apologized on Thursday for broadcasting a segment in which a writer who has talked about his cancer diagnosis was mocked for having what the program called “Nazi hair.”
“Full Frontal,” a topical satire hosted by Ms. Bee, ran the segment on Wednesday. It featured Michael Rubens, a correspondent for the show, attending the Conservative Political Action Conference in February.
Talking about how the conference had changed over time, a narrator for the segment said, “Just last year, CPAC was dominated by Ted Cruz supporters and chirpy little [expletive] with bow ties.”
The narrator added: “This year, the bow ties were gone and replaced by Nazi hair. Nazi hair. Nazi hair.” Each time the phrase was spoken, an image was shown of conference attendees with short haircuts.
One of those people was Kyle Coddington, a writer who contributes to publications like OUTSET, which covers conservative and libertarian politics and culture.
In a post at OUTSET on Thursday, its editor in chief, Stephen Perkins, wrote that Mr. Coddington “was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer and recently completed his first round of chemotherapy and radiation.”
Mr. Coddington wrote in a post last month on his Twitter account, @_that_kyle, that his hair “slightly resembles” that of the far-right activist Richard Spencer, “but at least I have an excuse…cancer.”
In tweets posted early Thursday morning and directed at Ms. Bee, Mr. Coddington wrote: “Please delete this episode. I look like a balding potato.” He added: “Also, it’s not a Nazi haircut. Richard Spencer’s is, but mine’s from cancer.
Mr. Perkins said in his post on OUTSET: “On a personal note, as someone who has the pleasure of working with Kyle here at OUTSET, I urge Samantha Bee to release an apology for this sick attempt at a joke. Perhaps labeling someone because of their appearance is not the best approach.”
A Twitter post from the official “Full Frontal” account said on Thursday: “We deeply apologize for offending @_that_kyle in our CPAC segment. We only learned of his condition today & have removed him from the piece.”
On Thursday afternoon, “Full Frontal” had removed the segment from public viewing on its YouTube site, though Mr. Perkins had embedded it in his OUTSET post.
Jo Miller, a “Full Frontal” executive producer, said in an email on Thursday: “We’ve apologized to Mr. Coddington and his family members and we are donating to the GoFundMe account for his treatment. We wish him all the best in his fight against cancer and sincerely, deeply regret offending him and his family.”
Mr. Coddington and Mr. Perkins did not immediately respond to requests for further comment on Thursday afternoon.

Bee, the host of "Full Frontal" on TBS, apologized Thursday for a segment in which Kyle Coddington, 20, and others at CPAC were mocked for having "Nazi hair."
"This year, the bow ties were gone, replaced by Nazi hair, Nazi hair, Nazi hair," the video states.
Embarrassingly for Bee, it turned out that Coddington has a partially-shaved head because he is battling an aggressive type of brain cancer known as stage 4 glioblastoma.
Coddington, a registered Democrat who was covering the event for Outset magazine, said this morning a friend noticed him in the segment. That prompted his sister to tweet the screen-shot and an explanation, sparking national outrage.
"Fox & Friends" viewers also pitched in this morning, helping Coddington's GoFundMe reach more than $67,000 and counting.
But Coddington said he was left unimpressed by Bee's Twitter apology.
"It's kind of a half-apology I would say. The effects of this go much further than just me and an illness itself. It's just inconsiderate and unprofessional to lump together people with a certain hairstyle for the way they look," said Coddington.
He said he's relying on his faith and trying to stay positive as he awaits a second round of chemotherapy later this month.
"I pray every day that God gives me peace about my diagnosis and He does, so I don't worry about it. ... Stay positive, fight, never give up. That's the worst thing you can do, " he said.
