College football analyst Danny Kanell laid off as part of ESPN cuts
Danny Kanell, a notable ESPN college football analyst and co-host of ESPN Radio’s Russillo & Kanell, has been laid off.
The former Florida State quarterback announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. He is one of numerous ESPN employees being let go this week, including college football insider Brett McMurphy.
Kanell’s co-host, Ryen Russillo, reportedly is staying with the company. However, The Hollywood Reporter’s Marisa Guthrie reports Russillo, SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm and Baseball Tonight host Karl Ravech will have “significantly reduced” roles.
Other notable personalities out at ESPN include NFL reporter Ed Werder, college basketball reporter Dana O’Neil and college football recruiting writer Jeremy Crabtree. The network reportedly is laying off as many as 100 employees, with most of those cuts affecting on-air talent and writers.

ESPN declined to comment on the job cuts. In a note to employees, however, ESPN president John Skipper mentioned the changing habits of viewers.
“These decisions impact talented people who have done great work for our company,” he wrote. “I would like to thank all of them for their efforts and their many contributions to ESPN.”
Earlier in the day, possibly before he learned of his fate, Kanell tweeted a positive message about the layoffs.

Just a day before the NFL Draft, and in the midst of the NHL playoffs, ESPN has laid off a number of employees, including a number of on-air personalities.
Danny Kanell, the former NFL quarterback and radio host, was one of as many as 100 ESPN employees let go on Wednesday. The college football analyst tweeted "Poured my heart and soul into ESPN for last 8 years. Moved my wife and 3 kids to CT to go "all in" 5 years ago. Bummed it ended in 3 minutes." Kanell had long had a playful relationship with the Alabama fanbase, with the former Giants quarterback telling AL.com in 2016 he loved "the back and forth."
Ed Werder, who has covered the NFL for the past 17 years, was another notable name let go. Trent Dilfer, an NFL analyst, and Brett McMurphy, who covered college football, were also let go.
Former Press-Register Auburn beat writer Ted Miller, who was covering the Pac-12 for ESPN, also announced he was leaving the company.
ESPN President John Skipper sent ESPN employees a memo, published by a number of media outlets, prior to the firings.
"Dynamic change demands an increased focus on versatility and value, and as a result, we have been engaged in the challenging process of determining the talent--anchors, analysts, reporters, writers and those who handle play-by-play--necessary to meet those demands," Skipper wrote to employees. "We will implement changes in our talent lineup this week. A limited number of other positions will also be affected and a handful of new jobs will be posted to fill various needs.
"These decisions impact talented people who have done great work for our company. I would like to thank all of them for their efforts and their many contributions to ESPN."

Danny Kanell has confirmed to The Big Lead that he is out at ESPN. The former quarterback for the Giants and Broncos joined the network in 2010 a as college football analyst. Since 2015, he has also been co-hosting a daily show on ESPN Radio with Ryen Russillo.
It remains to be seen what will happen with that radio slot, but recently Stephen A. Smith rejoined ESPN Radio and had replaced the show on the network’s main Sirius XM channel.
