The Walking Dead star Daniel Newman comes out as gay after realising ‘now is not the time to keep it private’
The actor took to Twitter to reveal the truth about his sexuality, and after getting such a huge response, he posted a video on Youtube explaining his decision.
In the tweet, he wrote: ‘I’m #OUTandPROUD #LGBT Love you guys. Be proud to be yourself. We need everyone just the way you are! I’ll chat with you guys tonight.’
He later posted the video of himself explaining it was in a moment when a girl pointed out to him that his coming out could help many people, he decided it was the time ‘to be visible.’
‘If you are watching this then you know what it’s about,’ he said. ‘It’s just time. I was helping out at some homeless youth shelters and this girl came up to me and said “thank you so much
for helping out with LGBT” and she sounded like she didn’t deserve it.
‘And I said “why?”, and she said “because you’re straight”.
‘And I said “I’m not straight” and she said “why have you never said that publicly before? You could help change our lives”.’
He added: ‘It hit me like a gut punch. It felt like someone had knocked the wind out of me.’
He then went on to say he realised the importance of being visible, and that keeping quiet about such things, and when accomplishing incredible things, it can hurt people instead of help.
‘Staying quiet, we’re partly to blame for kids getting beaten and ridiculed,’ he said.
He explained he had only kept his sexuality to himself to keep his private life private, but has since realised that he can’t keep it private when ‘everybody needs you.’
The 35-year-old later returned to Twitter to encourage others to speak out: ‘I hope all you guys see the love I’m getting from around the World today, & it inspires you to come out & be #OUTandPROUD. #LGBT We need U.’
GAY ACTION HERO The Walking Dead actor Daniel Newman publicly comes out as gay on Twitter – and explains why in emotional YouTube video
ACTOR Daniel Newman has come out as gay to his online following in an emotional online video.
The Walking Dead star revealed in a six-minute long video that he decided to go public with his sexuality after a chance meeting with a homeless girl at a youth centre convinced him to.
The 35-year-old actor, who has also appeared in The Dark Knight and the 2009 film adaptation of Children of the Corn, admitted that he was open about his sexuality to his family and friends but had never said it to his fans.
He told his followers: “I realised how important it is in this day and age to be visible – to let people who know you are,” after he was “hit like a gut punch” when the girl thanked him for supporting the LGBT community and had assumed he was straight.
Daniel then corrected her, and she asked: “Why have you never said that publicly before? You could help change our lives.”
He then declared: “When you’re accomplishing incredible things and you’re hiding who you are, you are hurting hundreds of millions of people.”
The video comes a day after he tweeted that he was out and proud to his Twitter followers.
‘Walking Dead’ Actor Daniel Newman Comes Out On YouTube
“Walking Dead” actor Daniel Newman opened up about his sexuality publicly for the first time, coming out to fans on his social media platforms.
The 35-year-old star, who has also appeared in “The Dark Night Rises” and “Sex and the City,” first made the announcement on Twitter Thursday evening.
Though he stopped short of using the words “gay” or “bisexual” in reference to himself, Newman elaborated further in an emotional, nearly-seven-minute YouTube video. The star said he felt compelled to come out after volunteering at a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth in the clip, which can be viewed below.
“I was helping out and volunteering at some homeless youth shelters, and this girl came up to me. She was like, ‘Thank you so much for helping out with [LGBTQ kids], and she said it like she didn’t deserve it,” Newman said. “She said, ‘Because you’re straight.’” When the actor told the girl that he wasn’t, in fact, straight, she informed him that coming out could “help change our lives.”
That encounter, he said, “hit me like a gut punch. I realized how important it is, in this day and age, to be visible, have people know who you are.” After noting that he wanted to to steer clear of politics, he added, “You see at this moment how rights are getting stripped from people so quickly. Who are the easiest people to take rights from? People that are invisible, people that are staying silent.”
“When you are accomplishing incredible things and you’re hiding who you are, you’re hurting hundreds of millions of people,” he said. “So, by us staying quiet, we’re partially to blame for kids getting beat up and ridiculed, stereotypes and stigmas. If you don’t like them, you need to be visible, to change them.” He went to offer praise for men who have been labeled “sissies” for their effeminate behavior, noting, “They’re the strongest because they didn’t have a choice. Those guys are incredible and so, so amazing.”
In a Friday interview with People, Newman cited his southern upbringing as the reason why he’d remained silent about his sexuality until this week. “I didn’t really think about it really as hiding. I never thought of myself as being in a closet or hidden,” he said. “It just was that I didn’t really feel like talking about my private life.”
Thrilled to see you living authentically, Daniel!
