Trump takes aim at ‘Sleepy Eyes’ Chuck Todd
President Trump on Saturday swiped at NBC News personality Chuck Todd over his opinions on White House’s possible ties to Russia.
“When will Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd and @NBCNews start talking about the Obama SURVEILLANCE SCANDAL and stop with the Fake Trump/Russia story?” Trump wrote at 8:43 a.m.
“It is the same Fake News Media that said there is ‘no path to victory for Trump’ that is now pushing the phony Russia story. A total scam!” the president continued at 9:02 a.m.
Todd, the host of Meet the Press, said on MSNBC Friday that Trump seemed to be on the verge of a “temporary lame duck presidency.”
“The Russia cloud darkens all the time,” Todd said, adding that Trump’s problems are self-inflicted and that he is not feared by his fellow Republicans.
Apparently in reaction to Trump’s “Sleepy Eyes” taunt, Todd tweeted on Saturday morning that he feels wide awake.
“For those wondering, I slept well even tho I stayed up late watching the #msstate upset of UConn. #cowbell. Don’t feel sleepy at all though,” he tweeted at 10:08 a.m.
Three hours later, the President boosted his campaign for an Obamacare replacement with a pair of tweets that bashed a favorite media punching bag – as well as the Congressional Republicans who refused to get on board with his health-care bill last week.
“The failing @nytimes finally gets it,” Trump posted at 11:59 a.m. Then he quoted a column published by the paper on Friday, which said: “In places where no insurance company offers plans, there will be no way for ObamaCare customers to…use subsidies to buy health plans.”
“In other words, Ocare is dead,” Trump wrote.
“Good things will happen, however, either with Republicans or Dems,” he promised.
The tweets fixed on the fact that an increasing number of counties are unable to attract any insurance companies to any subsidized plans on the state or federal health-insurance exchanges.
Republicans say that proves the Democrats’ health-care scheme has entered an unsustainable “death spiral.”

Todd appeared on NBC's "Nightly News" on Friday, where he discussed the Russia investigation and how Trump's unsubstantiated claims of President Barack Obama wiretapping Trump Tower has created "all of the current problems for this West Wing."
"I think the biggest problem here is you have the president not wanting to accept the conclusion that Russia tried to interfere in the election and that there is going to be an investigation in this, whether he likes it or not," Todd said. "The source of all of the current problems for this West Wing right now, for this presidency right now, all stems from that tweet where the president accused President Obama of wiretapping him."
"This has all been self-inflicted. The Russia cloud is dark enough," Todd continued. "This sort of Nunes Keystone Cop situation has made it that much worse. And again, it all stems from the fact that the president himself will not accept the idea that there is going to be a Russian investigation."
On a clip released Friday night for "Meet The Press," Todd invited former White House press secretary Josh Earnest to discuss the Russia investigation.
The FBI is investigating potential connections between Trump campaign aides and the Russian government, which intelligence agencies say tried to interfere in the 2016 elections. The Trump administration has claimed that alleged surveillance of its campaign — and potential unmasking of campaign officials in intelligence reports — by Obama administration officials is the bigger story, following the president's tweeted statement that Obama wiretapped him.
Later Saturday, the president tweeted: "Wow,@FoxNewsjust reporting big news. Source: "Official behind unmasking is high up. Known Intel official is responsible. Some unmasked.... ..not associated with Russia. Trump team spied on before he was nominated." If this is true, does not get much bigger. Would be sad for U.S."
Trump has drawn criticism in the past for mocking reporters' appearances. During the 2016 campaign, Trump mocked New York TImes reporter Serge F. Kovaleski, who has a physical disability. Last July, Trump tweeted about Todd, referring to him as "sleepy eyes."
Todd responded to Trump's tweet, saying he "slept well" and doesn't feel "sleepy at all."

Saturday afternoon, Trump praised the "failing" New York Times, despite repeatedly criticizing the publication's coverage of him, likely referring to a story published online Friday. Trump also implied that he would be willing to work with Democrats for a new health care plan, and not just Republicans.

The tirade comes after a busy news week of lingering congressional investigations into whether Russia interfered in the presidential election. Democrats called on Republican Rep. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee heading up a Russia investigation, to step down from the inquiry after revelations he had a secret meeting at the White House. On Thursday, former Trump National Security Advisor Gen. Michael Flynn asked for immunity in exchange for an interview and the Senate held an open hearing on the matter.
Todd took aim at Trump on MSNBC on Friday, as reported in RealClear Politics, hinting Trump may be on the verge of a lame duck presidency. He noted the president's low approval ratings, his inability to repeal Obamacare and the Russia investigation.
"The fact is the president, if he cannot accept the fact there is Russian interference in our democracy in some form or another and he fights it every step of the way, then this story will consume him and his presidency will never get going and never get off the ground," Todd said.
Todd responded Saturday morning.
It's not the first time Trump used the "sleepy eyes" dig on Todd.
"Sleepy eyes Chuck Todd, a man with so little touch for politics, is at it again," the then-presidential hopeful tweeted in July. "He could not have watched my standing ovation speech in N.C."
Todd responded later that day as well.
NBC senior political analyst Mark Halperin has also been the target of the insult.
New York Times White House correspondent Glenn Thrush, in a nod to the band The Eagles, tweeted the slight in the spirit of the song "Lyin' Eyes."
About noon, the president did something he doesn't often do: Tweet something positive about the New York Times, although he still used the "failing" adjective.
The tweets referenced a Times story Friday about how parts of the country may be without an Obamacare option next year.
He then tweeted details of a Friday Fox News story about the "unmasking" of private citizens tied to Trump "whose communications apparently were caught up in surveillance under the Obama administration."
