Jessica Gomes not retiring from Sports Illustrated Swimsuit

Perth modelling sensation Jessica Gomes has not ruled out a return to the pages of Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit edition.

Reports last year suggested the 30-year-old had decided to retire from appearing in the iconic magazine after eight years in a row to continue her transition to actress and high-fashion model via her role as the face of David Jones.

But Gomes toldAAA she has not “retired” from Sports Illustrated.

“I have done it for eight years and last year I wanted to focus on making that transition to film and the scheduling just didn’t get right,” she said.

“Sports Illustrated is a magazine I will love forever because they really made my career. Eight years is a huge deal and without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. I absolutely have respect for that magazine and would love to continue shooting for them.”

After wowing the star-studded audience on the catwalk for David Jones’ AW16 launch in Sydney last night, Gomes is set to return to her home base of Los Angeles to continue working on her acting career.

“I just shot two films last year and they both come out this year. One with Bruce Willis called Going Under and one with Owen Wilson, Ed Helms and Glenn Close called Bastards,” she said.

Gomes said she was thrilled to be starring alongside acting veteran Close.

“(Close) is amazing. She plays my mother-in-law and she is just incredible. She is such a cool woman,” she said.
Balancing her modelling and acting career means it is harder for Gomes to find time to come back to WA to visit family.

“I desperately want to get back there as soon as I can,” she exclaimed.

“My parents have come over to Sydney to be at the show but my sisters are at home because one of my sisters is about to have a baby.”

Even with all of her continued successes, Gomes said she still feels like that 17-year-old who packed up and left Perth to try her luck as a professional model.

“I still can’t believe I am the face of David Jones,” she said.

“That was one of my biggest goals and dreams that I wanted to do. It is quite incredible the achievements that I have had and I feel very lucky with what I am doing.

“I think if I can say anything to girls who are coming from Perth, I am definitely an example of if you believe in yourself and push through and you really follow your passions, you can really do whatever you want to do.”
