Cab driver praises John Elway without realizing he's along for ride
The rumors and speculation about a possible Tony Romo trade to the Broncos have been percolating for a while now, but things kicked up a notch on Monday when Denver GM John Elway and and Romo were spotted together in Washington, D.C.
Even though the Broncos reportedly don't want to trade for Romo, there are plenty of people (hello, Emmanuel Sanders) who would be happy about having Romo come to Denver.
But in more important non-sequitur news than any Romo chatter: Elway took a ride with in a taxi while in D.C.
And during that cab ride, hilarity ensued because the cab driver, Sam Snow, was a huge football fan but totally unaware that he was driving around one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Glenn Stearns, one of Elway's buddied, asked the cab driver for his pick for the greatest QB of all time. Snow's answer? The guy sitting in his back seat.
The rest of the group decided to rile things up a little bit.
"John Elway ... he's not that great," one girl says.
"No. 1 was Elway, but why was he No. 1 in your mind?" Stearns asked.
"He was a great quarterback, great quarterback. Let's see the second pick ... I want to be fair and I hate to say it, it's going to hurt me to say it, but I'm not speaking as a Steelers fan ... I'd have to put Tom Brady in there," the cab driver said. "Tom Brady, then I would have to put Ben Roethlisberger in there.
"OK that's the top three."
Then they asked the cab driver if he would recognize Elway if he saw him. He said he certainly would, so they told him to turn around and BAM -- there's John Elway in your cab.
The driver then proceeded to lose his mind.
"I'm not even worried about the ride is free, I gotta take some pictures!" Snow said. "Elway!"
D.C. cab driver calls John Elway his favorite QB, discovers Elway is in his cab
John Elway was in D.C. for the presidential inauguration, and at one point, he had occasion to take a taxi from the Capitol Hill area. His cab driver’s garb made it clear that he was a big Pittsburgh sports fan, and so the conversation, not coincidentally, turned to the identity of the man’s all-time favorite quarterback.
The driver made the right call: John Elway. The thing was, he had no idea that the former Broncos great was in his backseat at the time.
A friend of Elway’s who was in the taxi with the ex-quarterback and his wife posted the amusing video on his Facebook account Friday, the day of President Trump’s inauguration. In it, a driver who identifies himself as Sam Snow says that Elway is his all-time No. 1 because “he’s a great quarterback.” His second choice is Tom Brady — “even though I can’t stand him” — then a pick befitting his loyalties, Ben Roethlisberger (who himself wears a No. 7 jersey in honor of Elway, his childhood hero).
“If you ran into Elway, would you know who he was?” Snow is asked. After he replies, “Oh, yeah,” he is asked to turn around, at which point he gets quite the surprise.
“Oh, come on, man, are you serious?” Snow exclaims. He asks to take a photo with Elway, with the stipulation that the 56-year-old, now the Broncos’ general manager, take his sunglasses off.
Snow proves he really is a Steelers fan (not that anyone else would ever want to wear that jacket) by recalling the 1998 AFC championship game, when Elway bested Pittsburgh quarterback Kordell Stewart. Upon hearing the names of former Steelers pass-rushers Greg Lloyd and Kevin Greene, Elway wryly notes how they “hit” him.
In addition to attending the inauguration in a VIP section, Elway was at a dinner for donors hosted by Trump the night before. At that dinner, the then-president-elect gave a shout-out to his favorite quarterback: Brady.
'That's John Elway! I'll be damned': Cab driver praises former quarterback as his all-time favorite before realizing the Broncos legend is sitting in the backseat
A taxi driver was caught on film raving about John Elway as his all-time favorite quarterback before discovering the NFL legend was actually sitting in the backseat of his cab.
Sam Snow, who was wearing a Steelers jacket and hat, was driving a group of people around Washington D.C. during Donald Trump's inauguration on Friday when they started asking football-related questions.
Unbeknownst to him, the former quarterback and current Broncos boss was one of his passengers.
The driver said Elway was his top pick when asked to list his top three quarterbacks of all-time.
'He's a great quarterback, a great quarterback,' Snow said.
Snow continued to praise Elway, 56, as his passengers laughed and egged him on.
The driver was filmed saying Tom Brady was his second choice followed by Ben Roethlisberger.
A woman sitting next to Elway, who was presumably his wife, told the driver: 'I think (Elway) is hot'.
One of the passengers asked if Snow would recognize Elway if he saw him in person before getting him to turn around to see who was in the backseat.
'Oh, come on man - are you serious? It's John Elway,' Snow says.
'Man, I gotta take a picture... Seriously! That's John Elway. I'll be damned.'
It was filmed by one of Elway's friends Glenn Stearns who posted the video on his Facebook page.
'I asked our cab driver Mr. Sam Snow to name his top three quarterbacks of all time. This is what happens when he finally realizes he is driving his #1 choice,' Stearns wrote.
The video has since been viewed more than 470,000 times.

Here’s hoping he left the cabbie a nice tip. (David Zalubowski/Associated Press) |
