Pokémon Go is doing something special this Valentine's Day
Do you want to catch them all this Valentine’s Day? The creators of Pokémon Go sure hope so.
Pokémon Go users will have the chance to earn more points as the game "shares the love" in honor of Valentine's Day. On Tuesday, Niantic Labs announced an in-game event, which runs through February 18, will allow players to earn double the amount of candy they normally would, according to a statement from Pokémon.
Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game that accesses a smartphone's GPS and camera to allow players to explore their surroundings in search of Pokémon creatures.
According to Pokémon, pink characters like Clefable and Jigglypuff, will also appear more often in the game.
On social media, the reaction to the in-game event was mostly positive, with some saying they plan on spending their Valentine's Day not in the arm's of a loved one, but searching for pink Pokémon.
Here Are All The Pink Pokémon You May Catch In Pokémon GO's Valentine's Event
Just a few hours ago, Niantic announced its Pokémon GO Valentine’s Day event which has just gone live as of 11 a.m. PST. It’s unusual, as Niantic usually gives a few days’ notice for something like this, but players are scrambling to figure out what exactly is going on, and what they’re going to be able to capture.
The focus of this event is on “pink” Pokémon, to match the general aesthetic of the holiday. While I have my issues with the concept of this event (zero new content at this point rubs me the wrong way, bonuses and spawns aside), but I’m going to ignore that for the moment and try to be a bit helpful.
There are questions about what Pokémon are actually spawning in this event based on the “adorable” and “pink” qualifiers that Niantic has revealed through its public statements. Now that the event is live, reports are pouring in about what’s spawning, and I’m going to try and craft a comprehensive list below.
Confirmed:
Chansey
Clefable
Porygon
Cleffa (hatch only)
Igglybuff (hatch only)
Smoochum (hatch only)
Clefairy
Exeggcute
Jigglypuff
Lickitung (now confirmed as another ultra-rare showing up alongside Porygon and Chansey)
Probable (will move to confirmed when sightings are fully reported):
Wigglytuff (I’m assuming he’s around, just rare)
Slowpoke
Slowbro
Unlikely:
Mr. Mime (due to region lock, which is unlikely to be lifted just for him)
Mew (classified as pink, officially, but probably a pipe dream)
Not Pink, Actually Purple (and probably not appearing):
Ditto
Nidoran family
Ditto
Aerodactyl
Mewtwo
Gen 2 (just for fun, could be secret releases, but I doubt it):
Flaaffy
Hopip
Slowking
Snubbull
Corsola

If we don’t see any secret Gen 2s roll out, that’s in keeping with the theory that Niantic is not doing any more “baby” Gen 2 events, and planning a larger roll out. If they do show up, then maybe all of Gen 2 will be trickled out through events, who knows.
At the very least, hopefully you will be able to fill up a few empty slots in your Pokédex from this event, even if there are no secrets and nothing new does appear. Check back to this post throughout the day/week where I will update it with what’s been confirmed as being on an increased spawn rotation.

Update: After I caught a Porygon, the only Pokémon I’m missing from the “pink” list, my next 5 km egg hatch was…also a Porygon. I’ve hatched over a thousand eggs and never gotten one before, so I have to believe that perhaps, for the first time, this update live-changed the contents of eggs to be more skewed toward these increased spawners. Either that or this was the most bizarre turn of luck ever.
Pokémon Go’s Valentines Day promotion will make it easier to get that Gyarados
Anyone else still playing Pokémon Go? Admittedly, we’re a dying breed. It seems like most players have dropped off, either because they got tired of catching Rattatas, or because playing Pokémon Go in the middle of winter is misery defined.
To the credit of Niantic, they know how to look after the few that remain. In recent months, they’ve introduced promotions around major holidays and events, which have had the effect of adding a bit of variety to a game that gets a bit mundane.
Over Halloween, Pokémon Go was flooded with ghost-type Pokémon, like Haunter and Gastly. Then when Christmas arrived, it made it vastly easier to catch the hard-to-find Pikachu. This was followed by a new year event that increased the spawn rate of starter Pokémon.
For Valentine’s Day, Niantic is doing first things. Firstly, it’s increasingly the spawn rate of pink (specifically pink) Pokémon, like Chansey, Clefable, and the ultra-rare Porygon. Moreover, you’re also given a decent shot at hatching a second-generation pink pokémon from an egg, like Cleffa, Igglybuff and Smoochum.
But perhaps most excitingly, the amount of candy you’ll get from catching Pokémon in the wild is set to double, albeit briefly. This makes Pokémon like Dragonite, which requires 100 candy, and Gyarados, which requires an insane 400 candies, much more attainable.
It also doubles the candy you get from transferring Pokémon to the professor, and from hatching eggs.
The Pokémon Go Valentine’s Day promotion starts today, and will end next Wednesday. Take advantage of it while you can!
