Tennis star Bouchard honours Super Bowl blind date bet

Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has honoured her promise to join a 20-year-old student for a date, after he won their Twitter wager over the US Super Bowl.

While the Atlanta Falcons were 21-0 ahead, Ms Bouchard predicted their victory online.

But when New England Patriots fan John Goehrke bet her a date that his team would triumph, she gamely accepted.
The Patriots duly mounted a nail-biting comeback in the game's dying minutes.

Ms Bouchard, 22, clearly a woman of her word, tweeted a picture of herself and Mr Goehrke en route to a New York basketball game.

"Just met my 'Super Bowl Twitter Date' John. On our way to the @BrooklynNets game!" she wrote.

The Montreal native had secured prime courtside seats for the encounter, where the Brooklyn Nets took on the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ms Bouchard is a one-time Wimbledon finalist who is currently 44th in the world tennis rankings.
She joked about her poor gambling form on the night of the Grammy's, tweeting: "Not making any bets tonight!" with a laughing emoji.

Quarterback Tom Brady, who led the Patriots to a 34-28 win, described the Super Bowl clash as a "hell of a football game".

Want a famous date? Try asking!

Eugenie Bouchard is not the first famous face to prove a good sport in the dating stakes.

In 2011, actress Mila Kunis accompanied a US serviceman, Sgt Scott Moore, to a Marine Corps Ball in North Carolina after he asked her to be his date via a YouTube video.

The same trick worked on Justin Timberlake, who joined Cpl Kelsey de Santis at a Marine Corps ball in Virginia - and called it "one of the most moving evenings" of his life.

And singers Rihanna and Taylor Swift both made teenage dreams come true via the MTV show Once Upon a Prom - showing up as glamorous prom dates for two high school boys.

Whether it sparked a historic love match too, fans will have to wait and see.

Eugenie Bouchard honours Twitter date bet with university student

Tennis player Eugenie Bouchard has made good on her vow to go on a date with an opportunistic university student after the pair agreed to a Twitter bet on the Super Bowl.

John Goehrke, who goes to school in Missouri, challenged Bouchard after the Canadian tennis player backed the Atlanta Falcons to win the Super Bowl ahead of the match in Houston.

"If Patriots win [can] we go on a date?' Goehrke tweeted to which the Sports Illustrated cover star wrote, "sure."

Luckily for Goehrke, the Patriots completed a miraculous comeback with Tom Brady dragging the team from a 21-3 half time deficit to win their fifth Super Bowl in 10 years in a dramatic over-time finish.

True to her word, Bouchard tweeted a picture of herself on the way to a Sports Illustrated swimwear photoshop, writing "busy day with @si_swimsuit and then I'm going on a date!"

In scenes that will give teenagers around the world hope of one day fulfilling their schoolboy fantasies, Bouchard later tweeted a picture of the pair on their way to watch an NBA game.

"Just met my 'Super Bowl Twitter Date' John. On our way to the @BrooklynNets game! @punslayintwoods," Bouchard wrote on Twitter.

Earlier in the week, Goerkhe had told the Kanas City Star newspaper that he never believed the world number 44 would agree to the cheeky date request.

"I thought maybe there was a chance she would respond, but I thought there was no chance she’d actually agree to it.,"

Bouchard admitted she was slightly apprehensive before the date.

“After all the media attention it got, it was something I could, first of all, not back out of. There was no chance," said Bouchard.

“I was worried, however, when I looked at his Twitter profile as soon as I lost the bet and his profile picture was a picture of Tiger Woods. I was like, ‘It’s one of those Twitter fans. I don’t even know what he looks like. What is going to happen?'

"But it turns out he seems to be a very nice boy."

The 22-year-old went out in the third round of the Australian Open last month, losing in straight sets to America's CoCo Vandeweghe.

Tennis star Genie Bouchard goes on 'Super Bowl date' with Vernon Hills man

Vernon Hills' John Goehrke got his date with Genie Bouchard, the same day the tennis star's Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue came out. So if Goehrke was just a casual Patriots fan before, he's probably a die-hard loyalist now.

Bouchard made good on her Super Bowl bet with Goehrke, a 20-year-old University of Missouri marketing major, by taking him to watch the Nets and Bucks play in New York Wednesday night. The pair sat courtside, posed for pictures together and posted on social media.

"Just met my 'Super Bowl Twitter Date' John On our way to the @BrooklynNets game! @punslayintwoods," Bouchard tweeted with a selfie with Goehrke on the ride to the Barclays Center.

It all became possible when the Patriots pulled off the biggest rally in Super Bowl history, erasing a 28-3 third-quarter deficit to beat the Falcons 34-28 in overtime.

But when a Falcons rout looked certain, Geohrke tweeted to Bouchard, "if patriots win we go on a date?" Bouchard, likely feeling pretty confident about a Falcons win at that point, replied "Sure."

After the Patriots' victory, all eyes turned to Bouchard, who started trending on Twitter. "Time to pay up and give this fan a date, Genie Bouchard," a Bleacher Report wrote. Other national outlets, like Sports Illustrated, covered it as well.

"Lesson learned. Never bet against Tom Brady," she tweeted at the time, also asked Goehrke, "So...where do you live?"

Bouchard later confirmed she would go through with the blind date and on Wednesday she made Goehrke's dream a reality.

But during Sunday's Grammy awards, she joked that future random fans better not get their hopes up about repeating Goehrke's feat. "Not making any bets tonight #GRAMMYs," Bouchard tweeted with a smiling emoji.
